A PDF gets smaller in one of three ways, and which one is right depends on what your document is made of. Drop a file above and it is rewritten inside your browser — nothing is uploaded, which for a contract, an invoice or a manuscript is the part that matters most. The default re-encodes the photographs and leaves the text alone, so the document still reads and searches exactly as it did.

Three ways to make a PDF smaller

A PDF is a container rather than a picture. It can hold text as drawing instructions, diagrams as vector paths, and photographs as embedded images — and those three shrink in completely different ways. This is why a tool with a single slider is always guessing on your behalf.

Re-encoding the images is the default because it is nearly always the right answer. The photographs in a report or a brochure are usually most of the file, and compressing them a little further costs nothing anybody can see. Everything else — the text, the fonts, the vector art, the page structure — is copied across untouched, so the document still selects, searches, prints and reads exactly as before.

The lossless tier changes nothing at all. It rewrites the file structure so that many small internal objects share one compressed stream instead of each carrying its own overhead. On a text-heavy document written by a word processor this typically saves a few per cent, occasionally fifteen, and sometimes nothing — which is a real answer rather than a failure, and you get the original back when it happens.

Rasterising renders every page and rebuilds the document out of those pictures. It produces by far the smallest file, and it is the only thing that helps much with a scan. It is also the one option that destroys something, which is why it is last and why the label says so.

What rasterising costs you

After rasterising, the text in your PDF is no longer text. It is a photograph of text. It cannot be selected, cannot be copied, cannot be found with Ctrl-F, and cannot be read aloud by a screen reader — which for a document you are sending to someone else may matter a great deal more than the file size.

For a scanned document this costs nothing, because a scan never contained text in the first place — it was already a stack of pictures, and re-rendering it at a sensible resolution is genuinely the only way to make it much smaller.

For anything produced by a word processor or a design tool, think before choosing it. If the file is going to a person who needs to quote from it, or into a system that indexes its contents, or to anyone who uses assistive technology, the saving is not worth what it takes away. Keep the original either way: rasterising cannot be undone.

Why a PDF sometimes will not shrink

Two documents of the same size can have completely different room to move. A twenty-page contract is almost entirely instructions — a few kilobytes of text and a font — and there is genuinely very little to remove; if it is large, the cause is usually an embedded font set or a logo saved at print resolution rather than the text.

A PDF that has already been through a compressor is the other common case. Its images are already at a low quality, and re-encoding them at our default would produce larger files containing worse pictures. Each image is measured individually and kept whenever the new version is not actually smaller, so a second pass over an optimised document correctly does almost nothing.

Images stored losslessly are deliberately left alone. Those are usually screenshots, logos and diagrams, and converting one to a JPEG is how a crisp graphic comes back with smeared edges and coloured fringing around the lettering. The saving is real and the damage is obvious, so that trade is not made automatically.

Nothing is uploaded, and here that is the point

PDFs are the format people use for the documents they least want to hand to a stranger: contracts, invoices, medical letters, tax returns, identity documents, unpublished work. Every compression here runs inside your own browser, so the file never leaves your device.

You can check that rather than believe it. Open the network tab in your browser’s developer tools and watch while you compress, or disconnect from the internet entirely and compress anyway — it still works, because the code that does the work is already on your machine.

How to compress a PDF

  2. Choose how to compress. Re-encoding the images is the default and is right for almost every document.
  3. Set the quality if you want to. It applies to photographs inside the document, not to the text.
  4. Press Compress Now and download the result. If the file cannot be made meaningfully smaller, you get the original back rather than a bigger one.

Compressing PDF: common questions

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends almost entirely on what the document is made of. A report full of photographs often halves or better. A text-only document may save only a few per cent, because there is very little in it to remove. A scan can shrink dramatically when rasterised. If yours barely moves, that is usually the honest answer rather than a failure.

Will the text still be selectable and searchable?

Yes, on the two default tiers — re-encoding images and the lossless rewrite both leave the text exactly as it was. Only rasterising changes that, and it changes it permanently: the text becomes part of a picture and can no longer be selected, searched or read by a screen reader. The control says so beside the option.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The whole compression runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device. Given what people keep in PDFs — contracts, invoices, medical and financial documents — this is the reason the tool is built this way rather than a convenience. Disconnect from the network and it still works.

Will it reduce the quality of my document?

The lossless tier changes nothing whatsoever. Re-encoding images affects only the photographs inside the document, at a quality you choose, and leaves text and vector art untouched. Rasterising re-renders everything at 150 DPI, which looks fine on screen but is visibly softer than the original if you zoom in or print it large.

Can I compress a scanned PDF?

Yes, and rasterising is the tier for it. A scan is already a stack of full-page images with no text, so re-rendering it at a sensible resolution costs you nothing that was there and usually saves a great deal. This is the one case where the most aggressive option is also the obvious one.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

No. A protected file cannot be read without its password, so there is nothing we can rewrite. Open it with the password in a PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and compress that. We tell you plainly when this is the problem rather than failing with a generic error.

Why did my file come back the same size?

Because making it smaller would have meant making it larger. Re-saving an already-optimised PDF routinely produces a bigger file, and a compressor that handed that back and called it a success would be worse than useless. When nothing can be gained you get the original, unchanged, and the reason.

Is there a size limit, and does it cost anything?

No limit we impose and no cost — no account, no watermark, no daily cap. Because nothing is uploaded there is no server capacity to ration. The practical ceiling is your own memory, so a several-hundred-page scan is the case most likely to strain a phone.

Sometimes the better answer is a different format — especially for a photograph stored as PDF.
