Why a container change still costs time
An MP4 and an MKV holding the same H.264 video are two boxes around identical contents, and rewriting the box alone — remuxing — would touch no pixel at all. That is not what happens here. Every video conversion on this site asks for a bitrate, and asking for a bitrate puts the picture through a decoder and an encoder, so even MP4 to MKV costs time and one generation of quality.
Changing the codec as well — MP4 to WebM — is the slower of the two, because VP9 and AV1 encode considerably more slowly than H.264 rather than because the other route skips the encoder. Neither is instant, however similar the two containers look from outside.
Pulling the audio out
Taking the soundtrack from a video is the most common thing people want from this category. The conversion pages re-encode it at the quality band you choose; the extract-audio tool is the one route that does not, because choosing M4A there copies an AAC track straight out of the video without a decoder seeing it.
One caveat worth stating: what your browser can encode depends on your browser. We check what yours actually supports before offering a target, rather than listing everything and failing halfway through. If a chip is missing on your machine, that is why.

Is there a file size limit?
Yes: 100 MB a file on the free tier, and a hundred files in one batch. Video reaches that faster than anything else here — a few minutes of 1080p from a phone — and a file over it is shown in the list and not converted. Below the cap the constraint is your own memory, which a phone hits before a laptop.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It never leaves your device, which for video is also why it is fast — there is no round trip. Disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and it still works.
Will converting reduce the quality?
A little, on every pair. The picture is decoded and encoded again whatever the two containers have in common, so each conversion costs one generation — there is no route through these pages that copies the frames across untouched. The quality band you choose decides how much that generation costs.
Why is a format missing on my machine?
Because your browser cannot encode it. We probe what is actually available before showing a target rather than offering everything and failing partway through. A different browser may show more.
