Centimetre and Inch

Centimetres are the everyday metric length — body measurements, paper, furniture — and they are the one metric unit that has no direct customary counterpart, which is why so much converting happens through them.

An inch has been exactly 25.4 mm since 1959, when six countries agreed to stop using slightly different ones. Before that a US inch and a UK inch differed in the seventh significant figure: 25.400 05 mm against 25.400 00.

What it costs to round the factor

The factor is 0.393701, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.39 it is off by 0.94 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 cm.

That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.

The factor is a definition, not a measurement

The inch has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 2.54 cm to one. The definition is exact by stipulation — it was not measured, and it cannot be refined by measuring it better. The decimal above is the whole of it, with nothing rounded away at the end.

Before that agreement the US and the British versions differed slightly, and old survey figures still carry the older definition. For anything outside land surveying the difference is far below the precision anybody is working to.

American listings are written in fractions, not decimals

The decimal above is not the number on the label. American dimensions are written in binary fractions — halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths — because that is how a tape measure is divided, so a sofa is 84 1/2 inches wide and a shelf is 11 3/4 deep. Converting 152 cm to 59.84 inches finishes the arithmetic and leaves you one step short of the mark you would look for on a tape.

That step is to put the part after the point over sixteen. Here 0.84 × 16 = 13.4, so 59.84 inches is 59 and 13/16, and since sixteenths are finer than anything you are buying gets built to, the sensible reading is 59 7/8. Furniture measured in centimetres, sold in inches

The fit question is almost never about the piece itself, it is about the gap it has to pass through. A standard British internal door leaf is 762 mm wide, which is exactly 30 inches, and a US interior door is usually 30 or 32. A sofa listed at 38 inches deep is 96.5 cm, so it does not go through a 76 cm opening upright, and whether it goes through on its side is a question about the seat height, not the depth.

The practical move is to convert the opening once and then shop in inches, rather than converting every candidate back into centimetres. Measure the narrowest point — usually the door frame with the door still on its hinges — write it down as a single inch figure, and compare listings against that. Converting in one direction repeatedly is where the arithmetic errors come from; converting once and staying there is where they stop.

A size in inches describes the body, not the garment

Clothing is the place where the conversion is correct and the answer is still wrong. A US trouser waist of 32 means 32 inches, which is 81.3 cm, but that figure describes the waist the garment was cut for rather than the waistband you would put a tape around. Shirt collars work the same way and are more honest about it: a 15 1/2 collar is 39.4 cm measured on the shirt, and that is a measurement you can check.

Shoes leave the conversion behind entirely. US sizes run in thirds of an inch from an offset that has nothing to do with the length of anybody’s foot, and European sizes are counted in Paris points of two thirds of a centimetre. A foot measured at 26.5 cm maps to a size on a chart; it does not divide by 2.54 into anything meaningful, and treating it as though it did produces a shoe two sizes out.

The inch survived metrication in a few specific places

A European buying a 55-inch television is not buying anything metric. Screen diagonals are quoted in inches in countries that have used nothing but metres for a century, and the centimetre figure, where it appears at all, is in the specification table rather than on the price ticket. The same is true of laptop screens at 13.3, 14 and 15.6, and of the 19-inch rack that server hardware is built to.

Records and bicycles kept the unit too, in different ways. A 12-inch, 10-inch or 7-inch record is named in inches everywhere. Bicycle wheels are named in inches — 26, 27.5, 29 — while the measurement that decides whether a tyre actually fits is the bead seat diameter in millimetres, so a 29-inch wheel and a 700C wheel are both 622 mm and are the same rim under two names. The inch is the label; the millimetre is the measurement.

A diagonal in centimetres does not tell you the width

Screen sizes are the one place where converting the number correctly still leaves you unable to answer the question. A diagonal fixes the size of a rectangle only once the shape is known: at 16:9, a 55-inch screen is 139.7 cm corner to corner, 121.8 cm wide and 68.5 cm tall. The width is what the cabinet has to hold and the height is what the wall bracket has to clear, and neither is the number in the product name.

The shape matters more than it looks. A 55-inch panel in the old 4:3 ratio would be 111.8 cm wide rather than 121.8, a difference of ten centimetres from the same diagonal. It is also worth knowing that a cathode-ray television’s stated diagonal included tube area hidden behind the bezel, while a flat panel’s diagonal is the visible image — so an old set and a new one with the same number on the box do not show the same amount of picture.

Estimating inches from centimetres without the field above

Divide by two and a half. It is the only shortcut worth carrying, because halving and halving again and then doubling is arithmetic anybody can do standing in a shop: 90 cm becomes 36, 120 cm becomes 48, 200 cm becomes 80. The true figures are 35.43, 47.24 and 78.74, so the estimate runs consistently about 1.6% high and never in the other direction.

That bias is what makes it usable. An estimate that is always slightly generous will tell you a piece of furniture fits when it is marginal, so treat anything within about 5% as needing the real number. At room scale the shortcut is out by roughly three centimetres per two metres — irrelevant for deciding whether a rug suits a room, and far too coarse for drilling a bracket.

Where 2.54 comes from, and why every digit of it stops

The factor is not a measurement that could be improved by measuring again. In 1959 the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed to define the yard as exactly 0.9144 metres, which makes the inch exactly 25.4 mm and the foot exactly 304.8. Before that the American inch was derived from a metre of exactly 39.37 inches, giving 25.4000508 mm — two parts in ten million longer than the British one, and enough to matter to nobody outside a standards laboratory.

One exception outlived the agreement, in American land surveying, and the United States finally retired it at the end of 2022. For everything on this page that distinction is invisible.
