JPG vs HEIC

HEIC is about half the size; JPG is the one everything can open.

Choose JPG when

Anything you send to somebody else, upload to a form, or need to open on Windows without installing something. JPG is the safe default and always will be.

Choose HEIC when

Keeping photographs on an iPhone, where the space saving is real and everything in the ecosystem reads them natively.

The thing that catches people out

HEIC support outside Apple is still patchy, and many websites reject the upload outright. That is the reason most people are converting them.
