The direction of the error is worth holding on to. Reading a US gallon figure as though it were imperial makes the volume look larger than it is; reading an imperial figure as US makes it look smaller. Equipment sizing fails in the second case and overspends in the first, and only one of those announces itself.

Where the imperial gallon still turns up

British, Irish and older Commonwealth sources use the imperial gallon, and it survives in specific corners rather than generally: fuel economy in the UK is still quoted in miles per gallon on an imperial gallon even though fuel itself has been sold in litres since the 1990s, and older machinery documentation carries imperial capacities throughout.

Canada is the case that catches people, because both appear. The country is metric and sells fuel by the litre, but imperial gallons persist in some older equipment literature and in habits carried across the border from a market that uses the other one. Where a document does not say which gallon it means and predates metrication, the imperial figure is the safer reading.

Three orders of magnitude in a single step

A gallon answer with a decimal on it is often more usefully read as the customary units below it. A quarter of a gallon is a quart, an eighth is a pint, a sixteenth is a cup, and a 128th is a fluid ounce. So 0.25 gallons is a quart exactly, and 0.75 gallons is three quarts rather than a number to write down.

That is how an American specification will express a part-gallon quantity, and it is why converted figures look foreign on an American document. 1.5 litres is 0.396 gallons, which nobody would print; the same quantity is 1.59 quarts or 50.7 fluid ounces, and one of those is what would actually appear.
