Millimetre and Yard

Millimetres are what engineering drawings and datasheets use, because a whole number of them is precise enough for almost anything made by machine and avoids a decimal point that can be lost in a photocopy.

A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.

What it costs to round the factor

The factor is 0.001094, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.00109 it is off by 0.33 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 mm.

That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.

The factor is a definition, not a measurement

The yard has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 914.4 mm to one. Where 914.4 comes from and why it terminates

A yard is 36 inches, an inch is exactly 25.4 mm by the 1959 international agreement, and 36 × 25.4 is 914.4 with nothing following. That single decimal place is the whole reason imperial-to-metric length conversions are clean: every customary unit is a whole number of inches, and every inch is a whole number of tenths of a millimetre.

The direction this page runs in is the untidy one. A millimetre is 1/914.4 of a yard, which is 0.001093613298… and does not terminate, so every millimetre-to-yard answer is a rounding of an exact ratio. That is the opposite of the yards-to-millimetres direction, where the answer stops. Where the exact value matters, quote the fraction rather than the decimal.

The forms and systems that demand a yard

The real population of this page is administrative. Procurement systems carry a fixed list of units and a supplier outside that list has to fit its figures to it. American shipping and customs documentation asks for dimensions in inches and lengths of rolled goods in yards. Trade catalogues published for a US audience list a European product in the units the audience buys in, and somebody has to do the arithmetic once, for the whole catalogue.

The right approach in all three cases is the same: convert exactly, round once, and record both figures. Keeping the millimetre original alongside the yard figure is what lets the next person check the conversion instead of re-deriving it, and it prevents the rounded yard number from being converted back into a millimetre figure that no longer matches the drawing.

Leading zeros mean you wanted a different unit

A 250 mm dimension is 0.2734 yards. A 40 mm one is 0.0437. Neither of those numbers tells a reader anything, and a converter that prints them without comment has answered the question and failed the reader. The threshold worth watching is roughly a metre: below that, the yard is too large a unit and the answer arrives as a fraction nobody can picture.

The unit that usually belongs there is the inch. 250 mm is 9.84 inches, 40 mm is 1.57 inches, and both of those are numbers an American reader can place immediately. Above about three metres the yard starts to work — 3,500 mm is 3.83 yards — and below it, converting to inches or feet is not a compromise but the correct answer to the question that was actually being asked.

Rolled goods, where both units sit on one label

There is one genuine meeting point. Tape, webbing, ribbon, geotextile and similar rolled goods are described by width and thickness in millimetres or in thousandths of an inch, and by length in yards or metres depending on the market. A gaffer tape sold as 50 mm by 50 yards has a metric width and an imperial length on the same label, and neither figure is a conversion of the other.

That is a case where converting the wrong number does real damage. The width has to match a fitting or a seam and needs to stay in the unit it was specified in; the length is a quantity and can be rounded freely. At three decimals the round trip lands on 249.63 mm, and at two it lands on 246.9 mm — a three-millimetre hole opened by a rounding that looked harmless on the way out.

That is the argument for storing the original. Where a millimetre figure has to appear on a form in yards, keep the millimetre value in the record and treat the yard number as a rendering of it rather than as the value itself. Any process that converts, stores the result, and later converts back has built a slow leak into every dimension it touches, and the leak is largest exactly where the two units are furthest apart.
