Ounce and Kilogram

An ounce is a sixteenth of a pound. It is not the fluid ounce, which measures volume, and the two are only loosely related — a fluid ounce of water weighs about an ounce, which is where the name came from and where the confusion starts.

The kilogram was the last unit defined by a physical object — a cylinder in a vault near Paris that was slowly losing mass. Since 2019 it has been fixed to the Planck constant instead.

What it costs to round the factor

The factor is 0.02835, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.028 it is off by 1.2 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 100 oz.

The factor is a definition, not a measurement

Treat anything within about 20 g of a boundary as being on the wrong side of it.

The error that actually costs money is rounding the ounce figure before converting. Rounding 17.4 oz down to 17 loses 11 g, which is nothing until the parcel is at 496 g. Convert the number you have, then round the result up to the precision the tariff uses — usually a tenth of a kilogram — and never in the other order.

The packaging is part of the weight and not part of the listing

A product weight in ounces describes the item; a shipping weight describes the item in a box, and the difference is routinely a third of the total for anything small. A 6 oz item is 170 g, and a padded envelope, filler and a label can add 60 g to that — a thirty-five per cent increase that no conversion will reveal because the conversion was applied to the wrong number.

The habit worth forming is to weigh the finished parcel once for each packaging type and record the difference. After that, a listing weight in ounces can be converted and the known packaging added, which is both faster and more reliable than converting the total after the fact. The units are exact; the input is what needs the attention.

Customs forms are metric, whatever the label said

International postal and customs documentation is completed in kilograms, and it asks for the gross weight of the item as shipped.
