Kilogram and Ounce

The kilogram was the last unit defined by a physical object — a cylinder in a vault near Paris that was slowly losing mass. Since 2019 it has been fixed to the Planck constant instead.

An ounce is a sixteenth of a pound. It is not the fluid ounce, which measures volume, and the two are only loosely related — a fluid ounce of water weighs about an ounce, which is where the name came from and where the confusion starts.

What it costs to round the factor

The factor is 35.273962, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 35 it is off by 0.78 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 kg.

That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.

The factor is a definition, not a measurement

The ounce has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 0.0283495231 kg to one. The definition is exact by stipulation — it was not measured, and it cannot be refined by measuring it better. The decimal above is not the whole of it, though: this page stops at nine significant digits and the ratio carries on past them.

Before that agreement the US and the British versions differed slightly, and old survey figures still carry the older definition. For anything outside land surveying the difference is far below the precision anybody is working to.

Two conversions stacked, and where 35.274 comes from

The factor is not a measured constant; it is 2.20462 multiplied by 16. A kilogram is that many pounds because the pound is defined in kilograms, and a pound is sixteen ounces because the avoirdupois system says so, so the ounce figure inherits both definitions and is exact to as many places as anyone wants.

Seeing it as a chain is what makes the answer checkable. A 2.5 kg item is 5.51 lb, and 0.51 lb is 8.2 oz, so 5 lb 8 oz — the same 88.2 oz the one-step conversion gives, arrived at in the form the label will use. Where a spec sheet already carries a pound figure, converting from that rather than from the kilogram removes a rounding step rather than adding one.

The ounce stops at sixteen and the number keeps going

Ounces are a shopping unit with a short range. A US package of coffee is 12 oz, butter is 4 oz to the stick, a can is 15 oz, a bag of chips is 8 oz — the whole vocabulary lives between about one and sixteen. Past that, Americans switch to pounds and the ounces become a remainder.

So a metric weight of any size converts into a number nobody speaks. Two kilograms is 70.5 oz, which is 4 lb 6.5 oz to a reader and an unfamiliar figure otherwise. A five-kilogram item is 176.4 oz, which is 11 lb 0.4 oz. When the destination field is genuinely an ounce field, put the ounce figure in it; when the destination is a human, convert the second step as well.

Metric round numbers become customary ugly ones

The pack sizes on the two sides of the Atlantic were chosen independently, and the result is that every tidy number in one system is untidy in the other. A 500 g pack is 17.64 oz; a 1 kg bag is 35.27 oz; a 250 g block is 8.82 oz. American sizes run the other way — a 16 oz jar is 453.6 g, a 12 oz bag is 340.2 g.

That has a practical consequence for anyone listing an imported product. The pack size cannot be described in round customary units without either lying by a few grams or writing a decimal, and the decimal is the correct choice: a net-quantity statement is a claim about contents, and rounding 1 kg down to 35 oz understates the pack by nearly eight grams in the buyer's favour and the regulator's disfavour.

The precision the ounce field asks for and the scale can give

A hundredth of an ounce is 0.28 g, and a tenth is 2.83 g. Marketplace weight fields commonly accept two decimal places, which is finer than most product scales are calibrated to and much finer than pack-to-pack variation in anything filled by volume or by count.

The dual declaration on American consumer packaging is a free verification. A jar reading 16 oz (453 g) confirms the ounce and the gram in one line; a bottle reading 2 lb 4 oz (1.02 kg) confirms the pound and the kilogram. If a converted figure disagrees with the printed pair by more than the rounding on the label, the mistake is usually a fluid ounce that has been read as an ounce.

It is also the fastest way to spot a listing that was converted twice. A weight that has been through kilograms, ounces and back drifts by a gram or two at each rounding, and the tell is a metric figure with three significant digits that lands slightly off a round number — 999 g where the pack is a kilogram, 226 g where the pack is half a pound.

Multiply by 35, then add a per cent

For an estimate, thirty-five ounces to the kilogram is close and easy: 3 kg is about 105 oz, 0.4 kg is about 14. The rule sits 0.78 per cent low across the whole range, so adding one per cent back brings it inside a tenth of a per cent, which is finer than anything you would do in your head deserves.

A second check is useful at the same time. An ounce is a little over 28 g, so any ounce figure divided by 35 should give the kilograms back: 88 oz over 35 is 2.5 kg, which is where this page's worked example started. Two rough conversions that agree are a stronger signal than one precise conversion nobody checked.

Item weight and shipping weight are two different fields

Marketplace listings usually carry both, and they are not the same measurement. Item weight is the product as the buyer receives it, which for most goods means the retail package; shipping weight is what leaves the warehouse, including the outer box, the void fill and any documentation. On a light product the second can be double the first.

Converting a single metric figure into both is where listings go wrong. A 500 g product is 17.64 oz as an item and might be 24 oz shipped, and entering 17.64 in the shipping field produces rate quotes that will not match what the carrier bills. Weigh the two states separately, convert each, and put each in its own field — the arithmetic is trivial and the confusion is not.

Price per ounce against price per hundred grams

Whole categories are sold by the ounce and compared by it: coffee, nuts, spices, tea, cosmetics, supplements. European shelf-edge labels give a price per 100 g or per kilogram, American ones a price per ounce, and the two are 3.5275 apart — a price per ounce times 3.5275 is a price per 100 g.

That factor is worth carrying separately from the weight conversion, because a unit price is where the comparison actually gets made and where the two systems most often produce numbers that look comparable and are not. Fourteen dollars a pound is 87.5 cents an ounce, which is $3.09 per 100 g; a European price of €3 per 100 g is in the same neighbourhood, and neither figure would have suggested that on its own.

A different quantity entirely. A fluid ounce measures volume, and a bottle marked 16 fl oz holds 473 ml of whatever it holds — which weighs 16 oz only if it happens to have the density of water. Liquids are declared in fluid ounces and solids in ounces, on packages that otherwise look identical.
