Converting MOV to JPG saves one moment from a video as an ordinary photograph you can print, send or upload anywhere. It reads the frame from the file at full resolution rather than capturing the screen, and nothing is uploaded.

MOV to JPG
This is nearly always the situation. The camera was running and the thing worth keeping happened during it — a child’s expression, a goal, a first step, something that needed recording rather than framing. Nobody stopped to take a photograph, and now there is no photograph.
What comes out of a video is genuinely a picture, and it is genuinely not the same as one taken with the camera. The rest of this page is about that difference and about getting the best available version of it.
A photograph is one exposure recorded with all the detail the sensor captured. A video frame has been through a codec that describes what changed between frames and spends its budget where a viewer will notice — and what it economises on first is detail in anything that is moving.
So the same recording yields very different stills. A steady shot of somebody standing still produces a frame that is close to a photograph. A pan, a running child or a hand crossing the frame produces one carrying motion blur and blocking that were always in the file and only become visible when the picture stops moving. No setting removes it, because it is the source rather than the conversion.
Because detail is allocated unevenly, the timestamp is the real control. Half a second earlier or later — a moment when the subject is between movements rather than mid-gesture — routinely produces a visibly better picture from the same footage.
Frames just after a cut are worth trying too: encoders normally place a full-detail keyframe at a scene change, so the first frame of a shot often carries more information than the ones that follow. If a still is not good enough, move the moment before changing anything else.
The frame comes out at the video’s own resolution — 3840 by 2160 from a 4K recording, 1920 by 1080 from Full HD, whatever an older phone recorded. Nothing is scaled up.
For printing, work from the pixel count. A 4K frame is around eight megapixels, which prints acceptably to A4 and well at postcard size. A 1080p frame is two megapixels, which is a good postcard and soft at anything larger. And in both cases the video’s compression is in the picture, so a print from a frame will not match a print from a photograph of the same scene.
The obvious alternative is to pause the video and capture the screen, and it is worse in two specific ways. The picture is whatever size the player window was, which is usually far smaller than the video. And it includes whatever the player drew on top — a play button, a progress bar, a title, the mouse pointer.
Reading the frame from the file avoids both. What you get is the recorded image at its own dimensions with nothing over it, which is the difference between something printable and something that looks like a photograph of a screen.
MOV is Apple’s format, so a file with this extension is most often an iPhone recording. Recent phones record HEVC inside it by default, which is why some Windows machines will not play the video at all without a paid codec from the Store.
The frame grab here decodes in the browser, so it works regardless of what the operating system will or will not play. Worth knowing separately: a Live Photo is a still plus a short video, and if what you want is the moment the shutter was pressed, the still is already in your library at full photographic quality — no frame grab needed.
Because the picture is going where photographs go: a message, an email, a print service, a photo library, a school newsletter, a social post. JPG is accepted by all of them without a second thought, and a photographic frame absorbs its compression without any visible cost.
If the still is destined for a web page rather than a person, WebP or AVIF is smaller at the same quality. And if the frame is mostly text or interface — a screen recording rather than a scene — PNG is the better choice, since lossy compression is at its worst on hard edges.
The decoding runs inside the browser tab on your own processor. A four-gigabyte holiday video is read from disk rather than sent anywhere, so there is no upload to sit through before you can take a 200-kilobyte picture out of it.
On a hosted converter the transfer is nearly always slower than the work, which makes this a much larger difference for video than for images. It also means the recording — usually of family, usually of children — never leaves the device it is on.

JPG has no alpha channel. A transparent MOV comes out with those areas filled in — white unless something else is set — and no setting in JPG brings the transparency back.
JPG opens in every current browser. MOV has narrower browser support than that. If the file is going onto a web page or into a form, that is usually the whole reason for the conversion.
The usual programs do not overlap: MOV opens in Final Cut Pro, QuickTime Player and Adobe Premiere Pro, JPG in Adobe Photoshop, GIMP and Preview — so whoever receives the result needs something from the second list.
