Yard and Metre

A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.

The metre has been defined since 1983 as the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second. It is not a physical object any more; the platinum bar in Paris was retired.

What it costs to round the factor

The factor is 0.9144, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.91 it is off by 0.48 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 yd.

That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.

The factor is a definition, not a measurement

The yard has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 0.9144 m to one. The definition is exact by stipulation — it was not measured, and it cannot be refined by measuring it better. The decimal above is the whole of it, with nothing rounded away at the end.

Before that agreement the US and the British versions differed slightly, and old survey figures still carry the older definition. For anything outside land surveying the difference is far below the precision anybody is working to.

Setting out in metres from a specification written in yards

A dimension in yards that has to be built in a metric country is a different problem from a dimension that only has to be understood. The tape on site reads metres, the material comes in metric lengths, the drawing will be checked against a metric survey, and the yard figure exists only in the document everybody is working from. The conversion has to happen once, be written down, and then be the number everyone uses.

What goes wrong is converting repeatedly and independently. Two people converting the same 40-yard dimension may write 36.58 m and 36.6 m, and a third may work from 36.5 m because the drawing was scaled. Convert every dimension on the document at the same time, to the same number of decimals, and reissue the drawing in metres rather than asking each trade to do the arithmetic on the spot.

The 8.56 per cent compounds along a line

A single yard is 8.56 cm short of a metre, which sounds like nothing and behaves like something as soon as the figure is repeated. Ten yards is 9.144 m; fifty is 45.72; a hundred is 91.44. If a layout calls for stations at one-yard intervals and they are set out at one-metre intervals instead, the hundredth station is 8.56 m past where it belongs — not a tolerance question but a different layout.

The same arithmetic decides whether a metric component fits an imperial spacing. Fence panels, netting, decking and paving are made to metric modules, and a run specified in yards will not divide into them: a 30-yard run is 27.432 m, which is neither 27 nor 28 whole metre panels. Convert the overall length first and let the module count and the cut piece fall out of it, rather than converting each panel position.

Certified distances, where short is the only fatal error

Anything that will be certified has an asymmetric failure. A road race course is measured with a calibrated bicycle and laid out with a short course prevention factor of 0.1 per cent, so a marathon is set out to 42.237 km against a nominal 42.195. The reasoning is stark: a course measured long produces slightly slow times, and a course measured short voids every performance on it and cannot be fixed afterwards.

The same logic applies wherever a yard figure becomes a metric one that somebody else will check. Convert exactly, then add rather than round to the nearest, and record both the original yard figure and the factor used. A converted distance with no record of its origin cannot be audited, and the first question asked after a disputed measurement is always which number was measured and which was derived.

Ordering metric material against an imperial drawing

Suppliers outside the United States sell in metric modules and quantities, and a yard figure has to be converted before an order rather than after a delivery. Netting, membrane and fencing come in 25 m and 30 m rolls; timber in 2.4, 3.0 and 3.6 m lengths; paving and decking in modules of 300, 400 and 600 mm. A specification of 100 yards is 91.44 m, which is four 25 m rolls with 8.56 m spare, and not three.

The number worth converting is the total rather than the piece. Converting each piece and rounding it up buys a surplus on every item; converting the total and dividing by the module buys one offcut. Where the material has a joint or an overlap — membrane, netting, roofing — add the overlap in metric after the conversion, because an overlap specified in inches on an imperial drawing is usually a nominal figure the metric product does not share.

A round yard figure is usually a name

Not every number in yards is a measurement. A hundred-yard range, a fifty-yard driveway, a three-hundred-yard plot: these are round because somebody rounded them, and converting to 91.44, 45.72 and 274.32 m attaches five significant figures to a number that carried one or two. The conversion is exact and the input was not, and the answer inherits the weaker of the two.

The test is whether the thing already exists. If it does, the round yard figure is a description and the metric figure has to come from a tape rather than from arithmetic. If it does not exist yet, the round figure is the specification, and converting it exactly is the correct thing to do — 100 yards means 91.44 m and the builder should work to that. Stating which case you are in is worth a line on the drawing.

Choosing the rounding direction before you convert

The conversion produces more decimals than any site can use, and the decision that matters is not how many to keep but which way to go. Material to be cut rounds up, because length can be removed and cannot be added. A clearance or an opening rounds down, because the thing has to pass through it. A certified distance rounds up. A setting-out dimension rounds to the nearest and takes its error into the tolerance.

Deciding the direction first stops the rounding being chosen for tidiness. A 40-yard dimension is 36.576 m; rounded to 36.6 for a cutting list it is 24 mm generous and harmless, and rounded to 36.5 for a clearance it is 76 mm tight and might not fit. Same conversion, same number of decimals, opposite consequences, and only the intended use tells them apart.

The dimensions worth leaving in yards

Converting everything is not the goal. Where a dimension is governed by a rule written in yards — a sporting body's pitch specification, a legal description, a standard that names the unit — the yard figure is the controlling one and the metric figure is a working aid. Converting it and then treating the result as authoritative introduces a rounding into a number that a governing document defines exactly.

The workable arrangement is to carry both. Put the yard figure on the drawing as the specification and the metric figure alongside it as the setting-out dimension, with the factor stated. That way a dispute is settled against the original document rather than against somebody's conversion, and the next person to work on it can see immediately which of the two numbers came first.

How do I estimate it without the calculator?

Take a tenth off and add a bit back. A hundred yards less ten is ninety, and adding a seventh of what you removed gives 91.4 against a true 91.44. Straight ten per cent is 1.6 per cent low, which is fine for pacing a site and not for setting out anything that will be measured again.
