Convert l to cup
A litre is a thousand cubic centimetres. It is not strictly an SI unit — the SI unit of volume is the cubic metre — but it is accepted for use with SI and is what fuel, drinks and engines are measured in.
A US customary cup is 236.6 ml, but American nutrition labels use a "legal" cup of exactly 240 ml, and a metric cup in Australia is 250. A recipe scaled up tenfold will show which one it assumed.
The factor is 4.226753, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 4.2 it is off by 0.63 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 l.
That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.
The customary cup a recipe means is 0.23659 l, and that is the one this page uses. A US nutrition label means the legal cup — 0.24 l, 1.4 % more — and an Australian or New Zealand recipe means the metric cup, 0.25 l, 5.7 % more again.
No single cup shows the difference, which is exactly why it survives: scale a recipe by ten and the metric cup has added over half a cup of whatever you are measuring. Worth remembering too that a cup is a volume and not a weight — a cup of flour and a cup of sugar are different masses, and that error is far larger than any of these three.
A litre is 4.227 US customary cups, which means four full cups leaves 54 ml in the pan — a little over three tablespoons. Half a litre is 2.113 cups, 250 ml is 1.057, and 750 ml is 3.170. There is no metric quantity that comes out as a round number of American cups, because 236.5882365 and a thousand share no useful factor.
The practical consequence is that a metric recipe measured in cups is always going to end on a fraction, and the fraction is where the accuracy goes. Counting whole cups and taking the remainder in tablespoons is more reliable than trying to fill a cup to a line that is not printed on it.
A nested measuring set is stamped metal or moulded plastic with a rim, and it is read by eye against that rim. Where a recipe needs better than that, the answer is not a more precise cup figure but a jug marked in millilitres or a scale, and this is exactly why metric recipes were written in litres in the first place.
The metric cup is defined as 250 ml, so four of them make exactly one litre and half a litre is exactly two. Australian and New Zealand recipes are written on that basis, and a set bought there will fill a litre in four clean scoops where an American set leaves a remainder every time.
A Japanese cup is 200 ml, giving five to the litre, and Japanese rice cookers use a smaller cup again — the traditional gō of about 180 ml — for rice specifically. So "four cups" and "five cups" can both be correct answers to how much a litre is, and the packaging on the measuring set is what decides.
Metric recipes are usually written in round millilitres, and the round numbers they choose show what they were converted from. 240 ml is a legal US cup translated; 250 ml is a metric cup; 500 ml is a half-litre chosen on its own terms; 475 ml is an American pint rounded. Recognising the origin often saves the conversion entirely.
It also flags the recipes worth being careful with. A metric recipe full of numbers like 118 ml and 237 ml was machine-converted from cups and half-cups, and rounding it back to the nearest cup restores what the author meant. A recipe in clean multiples of 50 ml was written metric and should stay that way.
Volumes in litres are almost always liquids — stock, milk, water, oil — and those are the case where the cup measure behaves. Water and stock are close enough to one gram per millilitre that a cup of either is about 237 g, and pouring to a rim is accurate to a few per cent.
The moment the same measuring set is turned on a dry ingredient the error changes character. A cup of flour can vary by up to a fifth of its weight depending on whether it was scooped or spooned, which dwarfs every unit question on this page. Where a metric recipe gives grams for solids and litres for liquids, convert only the litres.
The fractions worth having in your head are the ones a recipe actually uses. 250 ml is 1.057 US cups, so a cup plus a tablespoon. 333 ml is 1.409, a cup and a bit under half. 500 ml is 2.113, two cups plus not quite two tablespoons. 750 ml is 3.170, three cups plus nearly three tablespoons.
The pattern is that every quarter-litre adds a cup and roughly a tablespoon of surplus, and the surplus compounds. By two litres the remainder is 8.45 cups — a full extra half cup beyond eight — which is the point at which ignoring it stops being defensible.
Halving and doubling are where cup counts fall apart. Half of 4.227 cups is 2.114, which no measuring set expresses; half of a litre is 500 ml, which any jug does. If a recipe is going to be scaled, do the scaling in litres and convert once at the end rather than converting first and scaling a fraction.
The same holds for a recipe being multiplied for a crowd. Five litres is 21.13 cups, and counting out twenty-one scoops of stock is both slow and cumulative — every one of them carries its own filling error. A single large jug or a scale removes the whole problem, and for anything above about two litres it is the only sensible route.
An American kitchen holds two things called cup measures and they are not interchangeable. A dry set is a nest of individual cups filled to the rim and levelled off with a knife; a liquid measure is a jug with the cup lines set below the top so it can be carried without spilling, and it is read at the line rather than at the rim.
Both hold the same 236.5882365 ml, and the reading method is what differs. Pouring a litre into a dry cup means filling to a brim that has no line on it, which is where a large part of the practical error on this conversion comes from. Where a metric recipe is being measured in cups, the jug is the instrument, and the nested set belongs to the dry ingredients that were never given in litres.

Four US cups is 946 ml, 54 ml short of a litre — a little over three tablespoons. Four metric cups is exactly a litre. The shortfall is small enough to ignore in a soup and large enough to matter in anything set with gelatine or baked.
2.113 US cups, so two cups plus not quite two tablespoons. In metric cups it is exactly two, which is why half-litre quantities in Australian and New Zealand recipes come out as clean cup counts and American ones do not.
Less than for dry ingredients, but it still accumulates. A US cup and a metric cup differ by 13.4 ml, so a recipe calling for four cups of stock differs by 54 ml between the two — a fifth of a cup, which changes a sauce and does very little to a soup.
Because the customary system has no convenient small unit of mass for kitchen use and the measuring cup arrived early and stuck. For liquids it works: water, stock and milk are near enough one gram per millilitre that volume and weight track each other. For flour it does not.
Count whole cups and take the remainder in tablespoons. A US tablespoon is 14.79 ml, so a litre is four cups plus about three and a half tablespoons, and 1.5 litres is six cups plus five and a half. Measuring the remainder is far more reliable than judging a part-filled cup.
One cup is 0.236588 l. It is the same relationship read backwards, so an answer from one page put through the other has to come back to where it started.
