Tonne and Pound

A tonne is 1,000 kilograms, and it is not the same as either the US short ton (907 kg) or the UK long ton (1,016 kg). Where the difference matters, this one is sometimes written "metric ton".

A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms by the same 1959 agreement that fixed the inch. The abbreviation "lb" comes from libra, the Roman unit it descends from.

What it costs to round the factor

The size of that gap is what makes it survive. Ten per cent is too small to look absurd and too large to absorb: a 12 t machine read as 12 short tons is 24,000 lb rather than 26,455, an error of 2,455 lb that will not show up until something is loaded. A gap of a factor of two would be caught immediately; this one gets signed off.

Ten per cent lives inside a single word on the invoice

Commodities are priced per unit of mass, and the unit is written in whichever shorthand the trade uses. A price of $850 a tonne and a price of $850 a ton are 10.2 per cent apart, and neither document is wrong — they are quoting different units under names that differ by two letters or, in speech, by nothing at all.

The defence is in the wording rather than in the arithmetic. Spelling out "metric ton (1,000 kg)" or "short ton (2,000 lb)" once at the head of a contract removes the ambiguity for its whole life; converting at the end removes it for one calculation. Where a quote arrives without either, the country of origin is a reasonable guess and a bad basis for a purchase order.

The imported spec sheet and the American loading dock

Machinery is sold with a mass in tonnes almost everywhere outside the United States, and the equipment that will move it is rated in pounds. A 3.2 t machine is 7,055 lb, which decides the forklift, the trailer axle configuration and whether a floor will take it. Reading 3.2 tons as 6,400 lb understates it by 655 lb, and every one of those decisions is made against the understated figure.

The same mismatch runs through transport limits. The European articulated combination limit of 40 t is 88,185 lb against an American gross limit of 80,000 lb, or 36.29 t. The two numbers are close enough that a European loading plan looks feasible on an American road and is not, and the difference is entirely in the unit rather than in the vehicle.

The ton that is a rate of cooling, not a mass

One use of the word has no weight in it at all. A ton of refrigeration is 12,000 BTU per hour — the heat absorbed by a short ton of ice melting over twenty-four hours — and it is how residential and commercial air conditioning is sized across North America. A three-ton unit is a cooling capacity of 36,000 BTU an hour and weighs a couple of hundred pounds.

It is worth knowing because it is the one place the word appears where a mass conversion produces a confident, entirely meaningless answer. The tell is the context rather than the number: capacities run from one to five for houses and into the hundreds for buildings, and nothing in an HVAC document is being weighed.

Emissions arrive in metric even in American paperwork

Greenhouse gas accounting is metric worldwide, and United States federal reporting follows it, so a corporate or facility emissions figure in an American document is normally metric tons of CO2 equivalent already. Converting it to pounds makes it incomparable with every other emissions figure it will sit beside, which is a good reason not to.

Where the conversion does help is at the other end of the scale, translating a per-unit figure into something a reader can picture. A gallon of gasoline burned produces roughly 19.6 lb of CO2, which is 8.9 kg, and a car emitting 4.6 t a year is emitting 10,141 lb. The pound figure is the one that lands with an American reader; the tonne is the one that gets reported.

Two thousand two hundred, and a little back

Multiplying by 2,200 is the version worth carrying, and it is 0.21 per cent low — about four and a half pounds a tonne. Ten tonnes is roughly 22,000 lb and truly 22,046; a hundred is roughly 220,000 and truly 220,462. For reading a document that is more than close enough, and it fails in a direction you can name.

For anything invoiced, the shortfall compounds. On a 5,000 t cargo the rounded factor loses more than 23,000 lb — over ten short tons of material that has been paid for and not counted. Use 2,204.62 where money changes hands, and the field above where the figure has to agree with somebody else's to the last digit.

The long ton, and where it still turns up

The third ton is the British long ton of 2,240 lb, which is 1,016.05 kg — 1.6 per cent heavier than a tonne and 12 per cent heavier than a short ton. It comes from twenty hundredweight of 112 lb each, and it is the reason a British source and an American source can quote the same cargo as different numbers of tons with neither of them converting anything.

It survives in ship measurement and in older records. Displacement and deadweight for many vessels are quoted in long tons, historical production and trade figures use it throughout, and iron and steel documentation from before the 1970s should be assumed to mean it. Where a figure predates metrication and comes from Britain or the Commonwealth, 2,240 is the safer reading, and the difference from a tonne is small enough that only checking the source will settle it.

Cubing out before you weigh out

A weight in tonnes is one of two limits on any load, and for a great deal of freight it is not the binding one. A trailer runs out of floor space and cube long before it reaches its gross weight when the cargo is light and bulky, and the conversion to pounds tells you nothing about which limit will be hit first.

The number that does is the density, and it is worth working out in the units the equipment is rated in. A 40 t load spread across a forty-foot container's roughly 67 m³ is 0.6 t per cubic metre, or about 37 lb per cubic foot; anything lighter than that will fill the box before it loads the axles. Converting the mass is the easy half of the question, and quoting a freight rate on it alone is how a shipment ends up costing twice what it was quoted at.
