Convert yd to km
A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.
Kilometres are the road distance nearly everywhere outside the United States and the United Kingdom, which is why converting them is usually about reading a map or a race entry.
The factor is 0.000914, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.00091 it is off by 0.48 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 yd.
That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.
The yard has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 0.0009144 km to one. The definition is exact by stipulation — it was not measured, and it cannot be refined by measuring it better. The decimal above is the whole of it, with nothing rounded away at the end.
Before that agreement the US and the British versions differed slightly, and old survey figures still carry the older definition. For anything outside land surveying the difference is far below the precision anybody is working to.
Between the two units sit the mile on one side and the metre on the other, and both are better fits for anything a person would measure. A yard is a stride; a kilometre is a twelve-minute walk. No sport, no trade and no map uses both, which means every yards-to-kilometres conversion starts from a figure that was accumulated rather than measured — a course walked, a season played, a range stepped out, a boundary paced.
That is worth saying at the top because it changes what the answer means. A converted single measurement in this pair is almost always a sign that the wrong metric unit was chosen: 40 yards is 36.576 m, and writing it as 0.036576 km helps nobody. The conversion earns its place at four digits and above, where the kilometre figure is a number somebody can picture.
Long-range shooting is the one discipline where yard and metre distances coexist and are routinely confused. A thousand-yard range is 914.4 m; a thousand-metre range is 1,093.6 yards. The 85.6 m between them is nearly ten per cent, and at that distance a bullet's drop and wind drift are changing fast enough that ten per cent of range is a complete miss rather than a poor group.
Ballistic calculators take a unit and use it, so the error is silent. A solution computed in metres and applied on a yard range is over-corrected; the reverse is under-corrected. Competitive disciplines are explicit about which unit their distances are in — the classic British and American long-range events are in yards, most European and military ranges in metres — and the conversion is the thing that has to happen before the solution, not after.
Golf is the largest yard total most people meet. A course of 7,000 yards is 6.401 km and one of 7,600 is 6.949, so a championship layout is close to seven kilometres of intended line of play. The actual walk is longer, because the yardage measures tee to green along the line of play and says nothing about the distance from a green to the next tee, which on a spread-out course adds a kilometre or more.
Accumulated sporting totals behave the same way and are more surprising in metric. A 2,000-yard rushing season is 1.829 km of ground gained across an entire year, and a quarterback's 5,000 passing yards is 4.572 km. The metric figures make the scale legible in a way the yard totals do not — which is the only real argument for doing this conversion at all.
Older English and American land descriptions use yards, chains and furlongs, and they interlock: a chain is 22 yards, a furlong is 220, a mile is 1,760. In kilometres those are 20.1168 m, 201.168 m and 1.609344 km, and none of them is round because none of them was ever set against a metre. A boundary described as 440 yards is 402.336 m, a quarter of a mile, and it looks arbitrary only from the metric side.
Where a modern metric figure is needed from an old description, convert to metres and stop. A plot 300 yards by 220 is 274.32 by 201.168 m, which is a usable pair of numbers; the same plot as 0.27432 by 0.201168 km is the same information made unreadable. Kilometres belong to distances between places, not to the size of things.
Knock ten per cent off the yard figure and move the decimal point three places. Seven thousand yards gives 6,300, so 6.3 km against a true 6.4008 — about 1.6 per cent low, because 0.9 is that much short of 0.9144. Adding a sixth of the difference back gets you to 6.4, which is as close as an estimate of this kind needs to be.
The exact route is easier to remember through the mile. 1,760 yards is a mile and a mile is 1.609344 km, so a yard total divided by 1,760 and multiplied by 1.609 gives the same answer by a path most people can check. For 7,000 yards that is 3.977 miles and 6.40 km, and having two independent routes to the same figure is worth more here than either shortcut alone.
Yard totals in the four-digit range are almost never precise to the yard. Golf scorecards round hole yardages to the nearest yard and sometimes to the nearest five, and tees get moved between rounds; a course card is a statement about a configuration, not a survey. Converting 7,000 yards to 6.4008 km asserts a decimetre from a figure carrying tens of metres of legitimate variation.
The rule that survives is to round the answer to the precision the input had, expressed proportionally. A yardage good to the nearest ten yards is good to about nine metres, so 6.40 km is the honest form and 6.4008 is not. Where the yard figure is genuinely exact — a measured range, a defined distance — the conversion is exact too and every digit is defensible.
The yard has been exactly 0.9144 m since 1959, when six countries agreed on a single definition and stopped maintaining slightly different ones. Everything imperial follows by division and multiplication: a foot is a third of it, an inch a thirty-sixth, a mile 1,760 of them. So the yard-to-kilometre factor of 0.0009144 is not a measurement and never was, and every digit in it is exact.
What is not exact is the reverse. A kilometre is 1,093.6132983... yards, a decimal that never terminates, because 1,000 divided by 0.9144 does not resolve. That asymmetry is a property of which unit the definition was written in rather than of either unit's quality, and it is why a converter can give a terminating answer in one direction and a repeating one in the other for the same pair.
British, Irish and American racing quotes distances in miles, furlongs and yards, and a furlong is 220 yards — 201.168 m. So a mile and a half is twelve furlongs, 2,640 yards, 2.414 km. French and German cards give the same races in metres, which is why an international field can be described as running 2,400 m in one paper and about a mile and a half in another: 2,400 m is 2,624.7 yards, eleven furlongs and 205 yards, and not a round distance in the imperial system at all.
The odd trailing yardage on British race titles is the same effect seen from the other side. A course laid out to fit its ground gives distances like a mile and a quarter and change, and the extra yards are quoted rather than rounded away because the exact distance affects the form. Converting one of those to kilometres produces a figure with three decimals, and only the first two of them mean anything about how the race will be run.
1,093.6133, which is why this conversion has no memorable pairing in either direction. A kilometre is 1,093 yards and a bit; a thousand yards is 0.9144 km. The two units were never designed to interoperate and there is no round number anywhere near their ratio.
No — a thousand yards is 914.4 m, which is 85.6 m short. At long range that is a substantial difference in drop and drift, and a ballistic solution computed for 1,000 m and fired at 1,000 yd will be wrong by more than the target. Range cards state their unit for exactly this reason.

To metres, unless the comparison is genuinely against a kilometre figure. 7,000 yards is 6,400.8 m, which reads more naturally than 6.4008 km and keeps the precision visible. Kilometres are worth using only where the other number in the comparison is already in them.
