Convert km to yd
Kilometres are the road distance nearly everywhere outside the United States and the United Kingdom, which is why converting them is usually about reading a map or a race entry.
A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.
The factor is 1093.613298, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 1090 it is off by 0.33 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 km.
That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.
The yard has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 0.0009144 km to one. The definition is exact by stipulation — it was not measured, and it cannot be refined by measuring it better. The decimal above is the whole of it, with nothing rounded away at the end.
Before that agreement the US and the British versions differed slightly, and old survey figures still carry the older definition. For anything outside land surveying the difference is far below the precision anybody is working to.
Kilometres and yards do not belong to the same activity. A kilometre is how a road, a race or a map is measured; a yard is how a playing field, a firing line or a golf hole is measured. Nobody converts a driving distance into yards, and a search that lands here is nearly always somebody standing on metric ground with a yard-based instrument, table or benchmark in their hand.
That narrows the useful content considerably, which is why this page is about the two places the pairing is real rather than a general treatment of both units. If your figure is a travel distance, the comparison you actually want is against miles: a kilometre is 0.621 miles, and expressing it as 1,093 yards is arithmetically correct and communicates nothing to anybody.
Long-range rifle shooting is organised around a thousand yards, which is 914.4 m. Palma and F-Class matches are shot at it, and the phrase carries the weight in the sport that the four-minute mile carries in athletics. European ranges, meanwhile, are laid out in metres and stop at 300, 600, 900 or 1,000 of them, so the same distances have two sets of names depending on where the firing point was built.

That is not a rounding difference at range: at those distances a bullet is losing velocity and dropping fast enough that the last hundred yards changes the elevation setting materially, and wind deflection grows faster than linearly with distance. Most published ballistic data is tabulated in yards because most of it comes from the United States, while most ranges outside it are measured in metres. A hundred metres is 109.4 yards, two hundred is 218.7, three hundred is 328.1 — so reading a metric range distance straight off a yard table means reading the wrong row by nearly ten per cent, and the error compounds because drop is not linear with distance.
The adjustment units carry the same split. One minute of angle subtends 1.047 inches at 100 yards, which is where the convenient but inexact habit of calling it an inch comes from. A tenth of a milliradian subtends exactly one centimetre at 100 m, which is why milliradian turrets and metric ranges fit together with no arithmetic at all. Choose one system for the range, the table and the turret; converting between them at the firing point is the reliable way to put a correction in the wrong direction.
Golf is the other place these units collide, and it collides on every shot. Many European and Asian courses print their cards in metres while every club-distance chart, rangefinder and broadcast figure is in yards. A 150 m marker is 164 yards, and a player who plays a 150-yard club at it is short by fourteen yards — for most amateurs that is a club and a half, and it is the difference between the green and the bunker in front of it.
Whole courses convert the same way and the numbers are worth knowing because they are used as descriptions. A 6,000 m course is 6,562 yards and a 6,400 m course is just over 7,000, which is the figure a championship layout is usually quoted by. When comparing two courses across the divide, convert one card entirely rather than hole by hole — the per-hole conversions are where the arithmetic slips, and the total is the figure people actually compare.
Optical and laser equipment is frequently specified in yards even when it is sold into metric markets, because the specification was written for an American catalogue. A rangefinder advertised to 1,200 yards reaches 1,097 m, and one advertised to 1,000 m reaches 1,094 yards. The gap is nine per cent, which is exactly the amount by which a device seems to underperform its headline figure when the units are not checked.
The same applies to stated ranges for radio links, drone control and thermal optics. Where a device can display in either unit, the number to trust is the one you set it to and not the one on the box, and where it cannot, convert the specification once and write it on the case. Nine per cent is small enough to be dismissed as marketing optimism and large enough to matter at the edge of what the equipment can do.
Multiply by eleven hundred. It is the shortcut worth carrying because it is a doubling and a bit rather than a real multiplication: one kilometre is about 1,100 yards, three about 3,300, five about 5,500. The true figures are 1,094, 3,281 and 5,468, so the estimate is consistently high by 0.58 per cent and never low.
That bias is useful in exactly one direction. An estimate that always overstates the distance will have you holding over slightly too much rather than too little, which is the safer error on a range and the wrong one on a golf course. If ten yards in a thousand matters — and at long range it does — the estimate is for orientation and the field above is for the actual number.
The factor is exact: a yard has been exactly 0.9144 m since 1959, so a kilometre is exactly 1,093.6132983 yards and the digits go on. Almost nothing you would convert is known that well. A range distance is laid out to the nearest metre at best, a golf marker is placed to the nearest metre and mown around, a rangefinder reads to the nearest yard with an error of a yard or two, and a map distance is worse than any of them.
So round to match the source. A distance given as 1.2 km is stated to the nearest hundred metres and becomes 1,310 yards, not 1,312.34. Carrying more digits than the measurement contains is not harmless here, because it makes two figures look different when they are the same distance measured twice — and on a range or a course, that is the sort of discrepancy people spend an afternoon trying to explain.
