A US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, exactly — a definition that comes from an English wine gallon of 1707. The imperial gallon is 4.55 litres, about 20% larger.

A US customary cup is 236.6 ml, but American nutrition labels use a "legal" cup of exactly 240 ml, and a metric cup in Australia is 250. A recipe scaled up tenfold will show which one it assumed.

The gallon and the cup sit at opposite ends of the customary volume ladder, and getting between them means passing the quart and the pint. Four quarts to the gallon, two pints to a quart, two cups to a pint: multiply those and the answer is sixteen. Rebuilt that way it is three chances to drop a factor, which is why sixteen is a number to hold outright rather than derive.

The fluid ounce route is shorter and worth knowing as a cross-check. A gallon is 128 fluid ounces and a cup is 8, so the answer falls out of a single division. A batch that is easier to handle in quarts can be split there and converted at the end, and a remainder that lands between cups can be read in fluid ounces without leaving the ladder.

Fractions of a gallon behave the same way. Three quarters of a gallon is 12 cups, five eighths is 10, and a third is a little over five and a third — the only common fraction that does not land on a whole cup. Where a total comes out on that kind of number, measuring in quarts and topping up with cups is more accurate than trying to read a third of a cup off a jug.
