Inch and Foot

An inch has been exactly 25.4 mm since 1959, when six countries agreed to stop using slightly different ones. Before that a US inch and a UK inch differed in the seventh significant figure: 25.400 05 mm against 25.400 00.

A foot is twelve inches, and it is the unit heights and room sizes are quoted in across the United States. Aviation quotes altitude in feet almost everywhere, including in countries that are metric for everything else; China is the exception, where controllers clear aircraft in metres.

It takes 12 inches to make a foot

Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 12 of these fit into one foot with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a foot, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.

Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.

Where the decimal stops and the carpenter starts

The field above gives 30 inches as 2.5 feet, which is right and which nobody would write on a board. A cut list says 2 ft 6 in, or 2′ 6″ with the prime marks, or 2′-6″ on an architectural drawing where the dash keeps the two numbers from being read as a subtraction. The decimal is the intermediate step, not the answer.

The second step is short: the whole number is the feet, and what is left over gets multiplied by 12. Here 0.5 × 12 = 6, so 30 inches is two foot six. Do it on 137 inches and you get 11 with 0.4167 left, which is 5 inches, so 11 ft 5 in — and the arithmetic never has to leave whole numbers if you take 11 × 12 = 132 and subtract.

The remainder is in twelfths, not tenths

Three decimals come out clean and they are the ones people remember: 0.25 ft is 3 in, 0.5 ft is 6 in, 0.75 ft is 9 in, and by luck the thirds are close enough to be usable too, with 0.333 ft at 4 in and 0.667 ft at 8 in. Every other decimal produces a fraction of an inch, which is why a converter that stops at two decimal places has thrown away the part you needed.

The failure mode is reading the decimal as inches directly. A quantity given as 6.4 ft is not six foot four; it is 6 ft 4.8 in, and the four fifths of an inch missing from that reading is roughly the thickness of a piece of trim. This mistake survives because it produces a plausible number every time — 6.4, 6.8, 6.2 all look like heights somebody meant.

Tape measures count inches and mark the feet

A twenty-five foot tape sold in the United States is numbered 1 to 300 in inches, with the foot positions marked small and often in a box. That is why the number you are holding is almost always an inch figure with no feet attached: the tape was designed for adding, and adding 43 and 68 is easier than adding 3 ft 7 in to 5 ft 8 in.

It also means the conversion happens once, at the end, on the total. Measure the four walls of a room in inches, add them, then convert — converting each wall first and adding feet and inches separately is three chances to carry a twelve wrongly. Tapes sold in Britain and Europe usually carry a metric scale on one edge and inches on the other, which removes a different problem and not this one.

A height is the one measurement that must be two numbers

Human heights get stored as a single inch figure — 65, 70, 74 — because a form with one box is easier to build than a form with two. Nobody says the number that way. Seventy inches is five foot ten, and the conversion from one to the other is the same division with the same remainder step: 70 ÷ 12 is 5 remainder 10.

The decimal form is the one to avoid here entirely. Five point eight three feet is arithmetically identical to five foot ten and is not a height anybody has ever given. Rounding to the nearest inch is also the right precision: an inch is about two and a half centimetres, which is finer than posture and time of day vary a person over a single day.

Ceiling heights, door openings and the numbers that get reported

Building measurements are taken in inches and quoted in feet, and the standard figures are worth recognising in both forms. A standard interior door is 80 inches tall, which is 6 ft 8 in; an eight-foot ceiling is 96 inches; a nine-foot ceiling is 108. A reading of 82 inches at a door opening is 6 ft 10 in, and the two inches over the standard are the rough opening allowance, not an error in the measurement.

Reporting the figure to a supplier is where the format matters most. An order placed for a 96-inch header and an order placed for an eight-foot header are the same order, but a figure given as 8.5 feet is ambiguous in a way that 8 ft 6 in is not — somebody will read the point five as five inches, and half of a foot is six.

When decimal feet is the answer they wanted

One trade wants the decimal and does not want it converted. Civil engineering and land surveying work in decimal feet, in tenths and hundredths, and the rods and tapes used on a survey are graduated that way rather than in inches. On a grading plan an elevation of 412.35 is 412 feet and thirty-five hundredths, and turning that into 412 ft 4 3/16 in makes it worse rather than better.

The tell is which drawing you are reading. Architectural sheets carry feet and inches with a dash between them; civil and site sheets carry decimal feet with two decimal places. Mixing the two conventions on one project is where a tenth of a foot gets read as an inch, and the resulting error of 1.2 inches per tenth compounds along a run of stations.

The twelve times table, backwards

The multiples up to 120 are the whole skill, and there are only ten of them: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120. Any inch figure can be placed between two of them at a glance, and the remainder is a subtraction. A hundred inches sits between 96 and 108, so it is eight feet and four inches.

For a rough check without the table, halve twice and add a bit: dividing by 12 is close to dividing by 10 and taking a sixth off. Two hundred inches is about twenty feet less a sixth, so a little under seventeen — the exact answer is 16 ft 8 in. That is accurate enough to catch a misplaced digit, which is what mental arithmetic is for when there is a field above doing the real work.

Below the inch, the tape counts in sixteenths

Most measurements do not land on a whole inch, and a customary tape resolves to a sixteenth — 0.0625 of an inch, or about 1.6 mm. That is the smallest number the reading can carry, so a measurement of 43 5/16 inches becomes 3 ft 7 5/16 in and the fraction survives the conversion untouched. Only the whole-inch part is affected by the division by twelve.

Where this goes wrong is turning the fraction into a decimal too early. Writing 43 5/16 as 43.3125 and dividing by 12 gives 3.6094 feet, a figure with four decimals of apparent precision and no way back to a fraction anybody can find on a tape. Convert the whole inches and carry the fraction across as it stands: the sixteenth was the limit of the measurement and no arithmetic afterwards can improve on it.

How do I turn 2.5 feet into feet and inches?

Keep the whole number and multiply what is left by 12. Two feet, then 0.5 × 12 = 6, so 2 ft 6 in. The decimal part is a fraction of twelve inches, which is why 0.25 ft is 3 in and 0.75 ft is 9 in rather than anything ending in a five.

How many feet is 72 inches?

Six feet exactly, because 72 is 6 × 12. The whole-number results are worth recognising on sight: 48 in is 4 ft, 60 in is 5 ft, 84 in is 7 ft, 96 in is 8 ft. Any reading that lands on one of those is a measurement you can report without a remainder.

What is 0.1 of a foot in inches?
