Convert l to fl oz
A litre is a thousand cubic centimetres. It is not strictly an SI unit — the SI unit of volume is the cubic metre — but it is accepted for use with SI and is what fuel, drinks and engines are measured in.
A US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml; a UK one is 28.41 ml. They are different units with the same name, and recipes rarely say which they mean.
The factor is 33.814023, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 34 it is off by 0.55 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 l.
That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.
The US fluid ounce is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 0.02957 l; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 0.02841 l — smaller by 3.9 %.
That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.
Every other volume unit shared between the two systems is about a fifth larger in imperial: the pint, the quart and the gallon all are. The fluid ounce runs the other way. A US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml and an imperial one is 28.4131, so the imperial ounce is the smaller by about four per cent, and a litre holds 35.2 of them against 33.8 US.
The reason is that the two gallons are divided into different numbers of ounces. A US gallon is 3.785 litres cut into 128 fluid ounces; an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres cut into 160. The bigger gallon divided into more parts gives the smaller part, which is why the ounce inverts while everything above it does not. It is the one place where guessing from the pattern gives the wrong answer.
The imperial gallon defined in 1824 was the volume occupied by ten pounds of water under stated conditions. Divide that gallon into 160 and an imperial fluid ounce of water weighs, near enough, one avoirdupois ounce — which is the whole design. It is the only unit in either system built by weighing something rather than by cutting up a length.
That heritage explains the awkward modern number. The 1824 definition was replaced in 1985 by a flat 4.54609 litres, chosen to preserve the old value rather than to be tidy, and 160ths of it is 28.4130625 ml. The American ounce inherited no such rule: it is a 128th of a gallon that had been fixed at 231 cubic inches over a century earlier, and it agrees with the weight of water only by coincidence and only roughly.
Airport security limits are metric everywhere and are signposted in ounces in the United States. 100 ml is 3.381 US fluid ounces, rounded up to 3.4 on the signage, so a bottle labelled 3.4 fl oz and one labelled 100 ml pass the same checkpoint. A 4 oz bottle is 118 ml and does not, which is the size that catches people out most often because it looks close.
The rule is written against the container’s stated capacity, not its contents. A 200 ml tube with 30 ml left in it is over the limit and a full 100 ml one is not, because the number being read is the one moulded into the packaging. That is also why travel-sized products are made at 100 ml and 3 fl oz rather than at anything nearer the limit — the manufacturer is leaving margin for a badly printed label rather than for the liquid.
A US bottle reading 16.9 fl oz is a 500 ml bottle. One reading 33.8 is a litre; 25.4 is 750 ml; 8.45 is 250 ml; 1.7 is a 50 ml miniature. The decimals are the tell. American federal labelling requires both a customary and a metric declaration on most consumer packages, and where the container came from a metric mould the customary figure is the one that ends up untidy.
The reverse case exists too and looks different. A 12 fl oz drinks can is 355 ml, a 20 fl oz bottle is 591 ml, a 64 fl oz jug is 1.89 litres — round in ounces, awkward in millilitres, because those containers were designed in customary units. Reading which side of the label is round tells you which system the product was engineered in, and therefore which figure is the real one.
American wine and spirit bottles are 750 ml, 1 litre, 375 ml and 50 ml, and have been since the standards of fill were converted at the end of the 1970s. The customary figures — 25.4 fl oz, 33.8, 12.7, 1.7 — appear on the label as the secondary declaration and nobody uses them. It is the largest category of American consumer goods sold in round metric quantities.
That makes drinks the one aisle where a metric shopper and an American shopper are looking at identical containers. It also makes the ounce figures in an American cocktail recipe unrelated to the bottle: a recipe calling for 2 oz of gin is asking for 59 ml out of a 750 ml bottle, so the bottle yields about twelve and a half measures rather than a round number of them.
A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures mass, and the two share a name because a fluid ounce of water weighs about an ounce. In the imperial system that is nearly exact by construction; in the American one it is a four per cent coincidence, since a US fluid ounce of water is 29.6 g against the avoirdupois ounce’s 28.35.
The approximation collapses for anything else. A fluid ounce of honey is about 42 g, of cooking oil about 27 g, of golden syrup about 43 g. Nutrition and dosing figures are the place this bites: a serving stated in ounces on a food label is a weight, and the same number of fluid ounces poured out of a bottle is a different quantity of the same product. Where both appear, they are not two ways of saying one thing.
A litre is about 34 US fluid ounces, so a millilitre figure divided by 30 gives the ounces to within about one per cent. 250 ml is a little over 8 fl oz, 500 ml a little over 16.9, 750 ml a little over 25. The correction always runs the same way — dividing by 30 rather than 29.57 undercounts slightly — so a mental figure is a safe lower bound.
Three numbers cover nearly every practical case: 30 ml to the ounce, 100 ml to 3.4 ounces, and a litre to 34. For an imperial figure divide by 28.4 instead, and expect about four per cent more ounces from the same bottle. When the number is going to be compared against a limit rather than an estimate, take the exact figure from the field above.

No — one is a volume and the other is a weight, and they meet only for water. A US fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.6 g, which is 1.04 avoirdupois ounces, so the two are close enough to be confused and not close enough to substitute. For anything denser or lighter than water the relationship breaks completely: a fluid ounce of honey weighs about 1.5 ounces.
The imperial one, 28.41 ml, which makes a British "20 fl oz pint" 568 ml. Using the US ounce there puts about four per cent more in per ounce, and since a British pint is twenty ounces to an American sixteen, the pint figures end up a fifth apart. Modern British recipes almost always give millilitres, which settles it.
It is exact, not rounded. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches by definition, an inch is exactly 25.4 mm, and a fluid ounce is a gallon over 128. The decimal terminates there. The imperial fluid ounce is exactly 28.4130625 ml, being 4.54609 litres over 160.
One fl oz is 0.0295735 l. It is the same relationship read backwards, so an answer from one page put through the other has to come back to where it started.
