Eight pints make one gallon, and unusually that is true on both sides of the Atlantic: eight US pints fill a US gallon and eight imperial pints fill an imperial gallon. The units differ by a fifth in every case, but the ratio between them does not, which makes this the one conversion in US volume you can carry across systems unchanged.

Convert pt to gal
A US pint is 473 ml and an imperial pint is 568 ml — a fifth larger. This is the single most consequential difference between the two systems for anybody following a recipe or ordering a drink.
A US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, exactly — a definition that comes from an English wine gallon of 1707. The imperial gallon is 4.55 litres, about 20% larger.
Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 8 of these fit into one US gallon with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a US gallon, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.
Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.
The US pint is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 0.125 gal; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 0.15012 gal — larger by 20.1 %.
That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.
The ratio survives the Atlantic crossing even though nothing else does. A US gallon is 8 US pints and an imperial gallon is 8 imperial pints; the pints differ by a fifth, the gallons differ by the same fifth, and the eight is constant. That is not a coincidence — both systems descend from the same English structure of gallons, quarts and pints, and it was the size of the gallon that was redefined in 1824, not the way it divides.
So a pint count converts to gallons identically whichever system you are in, and the answer only becomes ambiguous when you try to state it in litres or in fluid ounces. Eight pints is one gallon; whether that gallon is 3.785 litres or 4.546 depends on which side of the source you are reading, and the pint figure gives you no way to tell.
Every product sold in both sizes prices the pint as a convenience. Paint is the clearest case: eight pints of the same colour will cost a multiple of what the gallon does, and the pint exists so that a trim job or a touch-up does not require a gallon can. The same shape appears in ice cream, motor oil, cleaning concentrates and specialty vinegars — the small container carries the packaging cost, and the volume is almost incidental.
The conversion is what makes the comparison visible. Multiply the pint price by eight before looking at the gallon price, and the difference is usually large enough to change the decision — or to confirm that the small size is worth it, because half a gallon of unused paint is not a saving. What the arithmetic gives you is the size of the premium, which is the number the shelf label leaves out.
Beer service is the commonest place the pint is a unit of count rather than measure. A US half-barrel keg is 15.5 gallons, so it holds 124 pints; a quarter barrel is 62 and a sixth barrel about 41. Those are theoretical pours — foam, line loss and the last of the keg take a real bite, and planning at around 90 per cent of the figure is closer to what actually reaches a glass.
Milk works the same way in a fridge. A gallon jug is 8 pints, a half gallon is 4, and a quart carton is 2. Somebody deciding whether to buy the jug or the smaller carton is doing this conversion on the basis of how fast a pint gets used, which is why the gallon is the wrong purchase for a small household regardless of what it costs per pint.
Because there are eight pints to the gallon, an odd pint count converts to an eighth, and eighths are hard to act on. Five pints is 0.625 gallons, eleven pints is 1.375 — numbers that are correct and useless. Restating them one rung down usually fixes it: five pints is 2½ quarts, eleven pints is 5½ quarts, and quarts are what pots, jugs and containers are actually labelled with.
Even counts behave much better. Two pints is a quart, four is a half gallon, eight is a gallon, sixteen is two — every one of them a size something is sold in. When a calculation lands on an even number of pints it is usually a sign that the quantities came from containers, and when it lands on an odd one, something in the recipe or the estimate was a ratio.
Paint coverage is quoted per gallon — commonly 350 to 400 square feet for one coat on a prepared surface — because that is the can the trade buys. A pint at the same rate covers something like 44 to 50 square feet, which is a door, a window surround or a run of skirting, and that is exactly what pints are sold for. Converting a wall area into pints rather than gallons produces a number that will not match any can on the shelf.
Two coats and absorption are what break the estimate rather than the conversion. A porous or previously unpainted surface can take substantially more on the first coat, and a colour change may need three. Work the area out in gallons, add a coat, and round up to whole cans; the pint figure is only useful for deciding whether the leftover will do the trim.
A gallon is 8 pints and 16 cups, and both numbers are attached to the same gallon. Nothing in an answer of "16" tells you which unit it belongs to, and a pint count converted with 16 instead of 8 is half the size it should be — or double, depending on which way the mistake ran. This is the same collision that makes the cups-to-gallons conversion error-prone, seen from the other side.
The defence is to convert one rung at a time. Pints to quarts is a halving, quarts to gallons is a quartering, and both of those are small enough to be obviously right or obviously wrong: 12 pints halves to 6 quarts, which quarters to 1.5 gallons. Anybody who has ever done it in one step with the wrong factor will recognise how invisible the error is when there is nothing to check it against.
Dividing by eight is three halvings, and the halvings are the check. Twenty pints halves to 10, then 5, then 2.5 — and the intermediate figures are real units, 10 quarts and 5 half-gallons, so a wrong step announces itself as a quantity that does not exist. Doing it as a single division by eight gives you nothing to notice.
Going the other way, gallons to pints is a doubling three times, which is easier still: 3 gallons is 6, 12, 24 pints. For anything above a few gallons the pint figure grows unwieldy fast, and that is the signal to stop converting — 15 gallons is 120 pints, a number that carries no more meaning than the 15 did, and the conversion has stopped earning its keep.
Eight. The full ladder is 8 pints to the gallon, 2 pints to the quart, 2 cups to the pint — so a gallon is also 4 quarts and 16 cups. The eight and the sixteen are the pair that get swapped most often, and eight belongs to pints.
Yes, and that is the one thing the two systems agree on here. An imperial gallon is 8 imperial pints of 20 fluid ounces; a US gallon is 8 US pints of 16. The ratio is identical and every quantity in it is about 20 per cent larger on the imperial side.

Sixteen. It is worth noticing that 16 is also the number of cups in one gallon — the same figure attached to a different unit and a different quantity, which is exactly the collision that makes this family of conversions error-prone.
One gal is 8 pt. It is the same relationship read backwards, so an answer from one page put through the other has to come back to where it started.
