Getting a photograph under 500 KB is a search rather than a setting: no encoder can be told a byte count, so we encode at several qualities and keep the highest one whose result fits. Drop a file above and it happens in your browser, with nothing uploaded. Five hundred kilobytes is a large allowance for a single image, and reaching it usually costs nothing you can see.

Most photographs reach 500 KB near the top of the quality range, which means the search finishes quickly and the result is visually identical to the original for practical purposes. Even a full-resolution image from a phone will often fit without resizing.
If it does not fit, the file is either very large in dimensions or very detailed — a wide landscape full of foliage, for instance, where every part of the frame carries texture. Those are genuinely expensive to store and a resize is the reasonable answer.
Expect no visible change. At this size the compression is removing the parts of the image that were beyond what a display can show, which is why the saving relative to an uncompressed original is still large.
Five hundred kilobytes is typical of email attachment guidance and of upload limits on forums and marketplaces. It is a limit that rarely requires a compromise, which makes it the pleasant one on this list.
A JPEG encoder takes a quality number, not a file size. The relationship between the two depends entirely on the picture — a photograph of a brick wall and a photograph of a clear sky at the same quality and the same dimensions differ in size by a factor of ten, because one is full of detail and the other is nearly empty.
So there is no formula. We encode at a quality, measure the result, and adjust — narrowing in on the highest quality that still fits under 500 KB. It costs a handful of encoding passes, which is why this takes a moment longer than compressing to a fixed quality, and it is the only honest way to answer a question posed in kilobytes.
Not always, and it will tell you when it cannot. The search stops at quality 30, because below that a JPEG stops being a smaller version of your photograph and becomes a blocky approximation of it. If 500 KB is unreachable at that floor, you get the smallest sensible file and a clear statement that the target was missed — the fix is then to reduce the dimensions, which is far more effective than pushing the quality lower.
