Getting a photograph under 50 KB is a search rather than a setting: no encoder can be told a byte count, so we encode at several qualities and keep the highest one whose result fits. Drop a file above and it happens in your browser, with nothing uploaded. Fifty kilobytes is reachable for most photographs, though usually not without either a modest resize or a quality low enough to notice on close inspection.
A photograph around 1000 pixels wide reaches 50 KB at a quality that still looks respectable. At full phone resolution it does not — you would be asking a four-megapixel image to fit in the space of a small icon, and the encoder will spend the whole budget on broad shapes.
The practical approach is to resize to 1280 px or 800 px first and let the quality search do the rest. That combination reaches 50 KB on almost anything while keeping the image recognisably sharp at the size it will be seen.
Expect visible softening in fine texture — hair, foliage, fabric — and expect it not to matter at the size a 50 KB image is displayed. What you should not expect is blockiness in smooth areas; if you see that, the dimensions are too large for the target and resizing will fix it more cleanly than any quality setting.
Fifty kilobytes is a common upload limit for profile pictures and identity documents. For a scanned document rather than a photograph, resizing hurts more than usual because the detail that matters is text — try quality alone first, and only then reduce the size.
A JPEG encoder takes a quality number, not a file size. The relationship between the two depends entirely on the picture — a photograph of a brick wall and a photograph of a clear sky at the same quality and the same dimensions differ in size by a factor of ten, because one is full of detail and the other is nearly empty.
So there is no formula. We encode at a quality, measure the result, and adjust — narrowing in on the highest quality that still fits under 50 KB. It costs a handful of encoding passes, which is why this takes a moment longer than compressing to a fixed quality, and it is the only honest way to answer a question posed in kilobytes.
Sometimes the better answer is a different format — especially for a photograph stored as JPG.
