Metre and Mile

The metre has been defined since 1983 as the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second. It is not a physical object any more; the platinum bar in Paris was retired.

A mile is 1,760 yards — a number that comes from a Roman thousand paces, adjusted by an Elizabethan statute to fit the furlong. It is exactly 1,609.344 metres.

What it costs to round the factor

The factor is 0.000621, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.00062 it is off by 0.22 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 m.

That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.

The factor is a definition, not a measurement

The mile has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 1609.344 m to one. The definition is exact by stipulation — it was not measured, and it cannot be refined by measuring it better. The decimal above is the whole of it, with nothing rounded away at the end.

Before that agreement the US and the British versions differed slightly, and old survey figures still carry the older definition. For anything outside land surveying the difference is far below the precision anybody is working to.

The 1,500 is not a mile, and the gap is a quarter of a lap

A mile is 1,609.344 metres and the 1500 is the distance most often mistaken for it. The shortfall is 109.344 m, which on a standard 400 m track is a little over a quarter of a lap — far too much to treat the two as interchangeable, and just close enough that the 1500 has carried the nickname "metric mile" for decades. At world level the difference between the two records is around seventeen seconds.

The same near miss runs through the older distances. Half a mile is 804.672 m against the modern 800, and the imperial 880 yards was that longer race; a quarter mile is 402.336 m against the 400. In every case the metric distance is the shorter one, which is why times set on imperial tracks were adjusted downward when the records were carried across, and why a lifetime best from the 1960s is not comparable with one from today without knowing which race it was.

What the metric racing distances come to in miles

The road and track programme is metric from end to end, and the mile figures for it are worth knowing because American race listings and training plans are usually not. Five thousand metres is 3.107 miles, ten thousand is 6.214, the half marathon at 21,097.5 m is 13.109 and the marathon at 42,195 m is 26.219. The marathon’s famous "and 385 yards" is the fragment past 26 miles, which is 352 m.

None of those is a round number in miles, and that asymmetry is the whole shape of the sport’s history: the metric distances were chosen and the mile figures are what falls out. It is worth carrying the two nearest anchors rather than the exact numbers — a 5 km is a bit over three miles, a 10 km is a bit over six — and using the field above only when a figure has to be published or entered somewhere.

Pace is the conversion a runner actually does

Distances get converted once and pace gets converted every session, so it is the arithmetic worth having ready. A pace per kilometre becomes a pace per mile by multiplying by 1.609: five minutes per kilometre is 8:03 per mile, four thirty is 7:14, four flat is 6:26. Going back the other way divides, so a seven-minute mile is 4:21 per kilometre and a six-minute mile is 3:44.

The step people get wrong is the last one. Multiplying 4:30 by 1.609 means multiplying 4.5, not 4.30, and the answer 7.242 has to be read as seven minutes plus 0.242 of a minute — 14.5 seconds — rather than as seven minutes fourteen point two. Treating the digits after the colon as decimals is the single commonest pace error, and at the 4:30 pace above it is worth about nineteen seconds a mile, which is more than most training bands are wide.

The one imperial distance the sport kept

World Athletics maintains world records for the mile and for no other non-metric distance. That is the reason a metric sport still needs this conversion at all: mile races are run, ratified and reported alongside the 1500, and a runner reading results from both has to hold two scales at once. The four-minute barrier, broken by Roger Bannister in May 1954, is why the mile earned that exemption rather than any technical argument.

Road racing kept it too, particularly in the United States, where a road mile is a real event with real fields rather than a novelty. The practical consequence for anybody with a metric background is that a mile time and a 1500 time cannot be compared by scaling: the extra 109 m is run at the end of a hard effort, so it costs more than its share of the distance. Conversion tables between the two exist for exactly that reason, and they are not linear.

A treadmill in miles against a session written in metres

A machine set to miles and a plan written in metres is the everyday version of this problem, and it fails quietly because both numbers look plausible. A session of 6 × 800 m is 6 × 0.497 miles, and setting the machine to half a mile each time adds 28 m across the session — trivial. Setting it to 0.8 of a mile instead adds 486 m per repetition, which turns the session into something else entirely.

The same applies to speed. A treadmill in miles per hour at 10.0 is 16.09 km/h, which is 3:44 per kilometre; the metric-looking 16 on a machine set to kilometres is 3:45 and a completely different effort from 10 km/h. Check the unit on the display before the first repetition rather than after, and if a machine will switch, switch it to the unit the plan is written in and leave it there.

Courses measured in metres and signposted in miles

Every certified road course is measured in metres, whatever unit the signage uses. The measurement is made along the shortest route a runner could legally take, using a bicycle with a calibrated counter, and a short course prevention factor of one part in a thousand is added deliberately — so a certified marathon is laid out to at least 42,237 m rather than 42,195. A course that turned out short would have every performance on it invalidated, and the extra 42 m is insurance against that.

Mile markers on such a course are therefore positions derived from a metric measurement, placed at 1,609.344 m, 3,218.688 m and so on. That is why they rarely agree exactly with a watch, and why the discrepancy grows steadily rather than jumping: the watch is measuring the path actually run, which is longer than the shortest line, and the difference accumulates at every bend.

How much of the mile figure the measurement supports

The conversion is exact and the input almost never is. A route traced on a map, a distance from a phone, a trail estimated from signage — all of them carry an error of at least half a percent, and satellite positioning under trees or between buildings can be several percent out over a short distance. Converting 3,000 m into 1.86411 miles publishes five decimal places on top of a figure whose first decimal place is uncertain.

Two places is the sensible ceiling for anything measured rather than defined, and one is enough for conversation. Keep the full precision only where the metre figure is itself exact and stipulated: a track event, a certified course, a record distance. Those are the cases where the mile figure is genuinely 3.10686 and not an estimate — and outside athletics, a distance held in metres rather than kilometres is usually a sign that somebody has already converted it once.

How precise should a mile figure from metres be?
