Ounce and Pound

An ounce is a sixteenth of a pound. It is not the fluid ounce, which measures volume, and the two are only loosely related — a fluid ounce of water weighs about an ounce, which is where the name came from and where the confusion starts.

A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms by the same 1959 agreement that fixed the inch. The abbreviation "lb" comes from libra, the Roman unit it descends from.

It takes 16 ounces to make a pound

Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 16 of these fit into one pound with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a pound, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.

Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.

From a total in ounces to pounds and ounces

Dividing by sixteen is exact and the answer it gives is a form nobody uses. 123 oz is 7.6875 lb; 60 oz is 3.75 lb; 200 oz is 12.5 lb. Every one of those is correct and none is how the weight would be said, because a weight below the next whole pound is expressed in the ounces themselves rather than as a fraction.

Sixteen halves four times, and that is the reason

The avoirdupois pound is built for a balance and a set of doubling weights. Sixteen ounces halve to eight, four, two and one without ever producing a fraction, so any quantity a merchant needed could be assembled from a small set of weights by simple bisection. A pound of ten ounces would fail at the first halving and a pound of twelve at the second.

That structure is still visible in every place ounces are used. Retail portions come in 4, 8 and 12 ounces; a "quarter" of something is 4 oz; recipes call for halves and quarters of a pound rather than for tenths. The system has a binary shape, which is exactly why it converts so badly to a decimal metric one and so well to being cut in half with a knife.

Where a total in ounces comes from at all

A weight quoted purely in ounces above sixteen has usually been produced by a machine. Digital kitchen and postal scales accumulate in ounces and only some of them display the compound form; databases store an integer count of ounces because it avoids a decimal; and a spreadsheet column adding up individual items produces a total nobody chose the units of.

The handful of places a human writes a large ounce figure are worth recognising, because they are conventions rather than measurements. Boxing and sparring gloves are specified as 10, 12, 14 or 16 oz — a padding weight, not a weight of anything being sold. Fabric and leather are quoted in ounces per square yard or per square foot, where the ounce is a density and dividing it by sixteen produces a number with no use at all.

Tracking a change that a pound is too coarse for

The ounce survives in the places where a pound is the wrong resolution. An infant’s weight gain, a change in a small animal, the drift in a batch of something being dried — all are counted in ounces because a pound is 454 g and the thing being watched moves by a fraction of that in the period being measured.

That is also why the compound form matters more than usual in those settings. A record of 7 lb 4 oz followed by 7 lb 9 oz shows a five-ounce gain at a glance; the same records as 7.25 lb and 7.5625 lb show a difference of 0.3125, which is the identical fact rendered unreadable. Where the change is the point, keep the unit the change is measured in.

A decimal pound belongs in a spreadsheet

Decimal pounds are not wrong, they are for a different audience. Any calculation — summing a manifest, multiplying by a rate, comparing two figures — is easier in decimal pounds or in plain ounces than in a compound form that has to be decomposed before it can be added. A system that stores 7.6875 is doing the sensible thing.

The rule is to convert at the boundary. Store and compute in one unit, and produce the compound form only at the point where a person reads it — the same discipline that applies to storing a mass in grams and displaying it in kilograms. Where both forms appear in one document, label them, because 7.11 and 7 lb 11 oz look enough alike to be copied for each other and are over half a pound apart.

What one ounce is worth against the pound it is part of

An ounce is a sixteenth, which is 6.25 per cent — a large step by the standards of most units. Rounding a weight to the nearest ounce means a tolerance of about three per cent either way, so a one-pound quantity stated to the nearest ounce is a claim accurate to within about 14 g and no better.

That coarseness sets the range the unit is useful over. Below about half a pound it is too blunt, which is where American recipes fall back on volume measures and everybody else uses grams; above about ten pounds the remainder stops mattering and the pound alone will do. Between those, the ounce is the right size, and the compound form is the natural way to write it.

For metal, the pound has twelve ounces in it

The troy system, which prices precious metals, counts twelve ounces to the pound rather than sixteen. Its ounce is the heavier one at 31.1034768 g, and its pound is the lighter one at 373.24 g against the avoirdupois 453.59 g — because twelve of a slightly heavier unit is still less than sixteen of a slightly lighter one.

The practical consequence is that dividing by sixteen is the wrong operation on any weight that came from a jeweller, a refiner or an assay. Those figures are almost always left in ounces precisely to avoid the question, which is a good habit to copy: where a weight of metal has to be written down, ounces or grams travel safely and pounds do not.
