US quart and US gallon

A quart is a quarter of a gallon, which is where the name comes from. Like the pint and the gallon it carries the US-versus-imperial difference with it.

A US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, exactly — a definition that comes from an English wine gallon of 1707. The imperial gallon is 4.55 litres, about 20% larger.

It takes 4 US quarts to make a US gallon

Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 4 of these fit into one US gallon with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a US gallon, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.

Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.

Check which US quart you mean

The US quart is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 0.25 gal; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 0.30024 gal — larger by 20.1 %.

That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.

Four quarts to a gallon, and the name that says so

The quart is the one unit in the customary system that announces its own ratio: it is a quarter of a gallon and has been since the word entered English from the Old French quarte. Nothing else on the ladder does this — a pint, a cup and a fluid ounce all have to be memorised, and the numbers 8, 16 and 128 have no mnemonic in them at all.

That makes quarts the safest unit to convert through. If you are unsure whether a gallon is 8 or 16 of something, going via quarts settles it: 4 quarts, each of 2 pints, each of 2 cups, so 8 pints and 16 cups. The chain takes longer than remembering the number and it is right every time, which is the trade worth making with a ladder this easy to slip on. It is also the only route that survives being half-forgotten, since each rung can be checked against a container you have actually held.

Motor oil, and why the jug holds five

Oil is specified in quarts and sold in quarts, but the container that most people buy is a 5-quart jug — a gallon and a quarter. That is because engine capacities cluster between about four and a half and six quarts with the filter included, and a 4-quart gallon would leave the majority of oil changes a quart short. The jug is sized to the job rather than to the unit.

Topping up works the same way. A dipstick that reads a quart low means one quart, not one gallon, and the gap between the marks on most dipsticks represents about a quart on a typical car. Adding a gallon to an engine that wanted a quart is a four-fold overfill and a genuinely expensive mistake, which is why every capacity in the manual is stated in the smaller unit. The same convention runs through the rest of the car: coolant, brake fluid and transmission fluid are all specified in quarts or smaller, and the gallon appears only at the fuel tank.

Equipment rated in gallons, filled in quarts

Aquariums, coolers, water heaters, buckets and sprayers are all sold by gallon capacity, and everything you pour into them arrives in quarts or smaller. A 10-gallon tank is 40 quarts; a 55-gallon one is 220. Water treatments and conditioners are dosed per gallon, so the conversion runs in both directions on the same job — the tank in gallons, the additive in quarts and ounces.

Weight is the part the volume figure hides. A gallon of water is 8.34 pounds, so a filled 55-gallon aquarium carries about 460 pounds of water before the glass, gravel and stand are counted. Anything above about 20 gallons is a structural question rather than a plumbing one, and the quart figure gives no hint of it.

Slow cookers, stockpots and the capacity that is not usable

Cookware rated in quarts is measured to the rim, so the usable volume is smaller than the label. A 6-quart slow cooker is 1.5 gallons of stated capacity and is designed to be filled between about half and two thirds — that is roughly 3 to 4 quarts, or a little under a gallon of food. Overfilling one does not cook faster; it cooks unevenly and lifts the lid.

The same discount applies to pots. A 12-quart stockpot is three gallons on paper and holds about two of anything that simmers. When a recipe and a pot are both quoted in quarts they look compatible and often are not, and converting both to gallons makes the mismatch obvious because gallons are a coarse enough unit that the headroom shows.

Four litres is not four quarts

A US quart is 0.946 litres, so four of them make 3.785 litres rather than 4. The gap is 215 millilitres — most of a cup — and it appears every time a product is sold in one unit and used in the other. A 4-litre container of coolant, windscreen fluid or paint holds about 1.06 gallons, and a rate calculated per gallon applied to it comes out six per cent weak.

Where a specification gives both, they will usually be rounded to the nearest sensible figure in each system rather than to each other. A capacity printed as "4.7 L (5 qt)" is 4.73 litres exactly; one printed as "5 L (5.3 qt)" is a different container. Reading which unit is the primary one — usually the one with more decimal places — tells you which figure the engineering was done in.

The imperial gallon divides into four quarts as well

The structure is shared: 4 quarts to the gallon, 2 pints to the quart, in both the US and imperial systems. What differs is the size of everything, uniformly, by about 20 per cent — an imperial quart is 1.136 litres and an imperial gallon 4.546. So a quart-to-gallon conversion is one of the few in customary volume that gives the right answer without knowing which system the source used.

The moment it stops being safe is when the number leaves the ladder. Five quarts is 1.25 gallons in both systems, but 4.73 litres in one and 5.68 in the other. Anything cross-checked against a metric figure, a weight or a dosing rate needs the system established first, and for a US product bought in the United States it is the US gallon in every case.

Odd quart counts and the quarter gallon

Because the factor is four, every quart count converts to a whole number of quarter gallons: 3 quarts is 0.75, 7 is 1.75, 11 is 2.75. That is unusually easy to hold, and it is why quarts are the unit to fall back on whenever a volume calculation has produced a number nobody can picture. Restating 0.625 gallons as 2½ quarts makes it a quantity again.

The one thing to watch is a five-quart figure, which looks like a container size and is a gallon and a quarter. Anybody who reads it as a gallon has lost a fifth of the volume, and unlike the eight-versus-sixteen confusion there is no round number to make the error obvious. When a specification says five quarts, it means more than the jug beside it, and the extra quart is the one that has to be bought separately.

Twenty. A 5-gallon bucket is also 40 pints, 80 cups and 640 fluid ounces, and it holds about 41.7 pounds of water — worth knowing before filling one you intend to lift.

Is four litres a gallon?

No. Four litres is 1.057 US gallons, about 5.7 per cent more. The two are close enough that products get sold in both and treated as equivalent, and far enough apart that a dosing rate calculated per gallon and applied to a 4-litre container is dilute by that margin.

Is an imperial gallon also 4 quarts?

Yes. The division is identical — 4 quarts, 8 pints — and only the sizes differ. An imperial quart is 1.136 litres against 0.946 for a US quart, so an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres against 3.785.
