US quart and Litre

A quart is a quarter of a gallon, which is where the name comes from. Like the pint and the gallon it carries the US-versus-imperial difference with it.

A litre is a thousand cubic centimetres. It is not strictly an SI unit — the SI unit of volume is the cubic metre — but it is accepted for use with SI and is what fuel, drinks and engines are measured in.

What it costs to round the factor

The factor is 0.946353, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.95 it is off by 0.39 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 qt.

Five quarts of oil against a five-litre jug

The two numbers look interchangeable and differ by 268 ml. Five US quarts is 4.732 litres; a 5-litre jug is 5.000. Filling an engine specified at five quarts from a 5-litre jug and emptying the jug puts in about 5.7% more oil than the figure was written for, and leaves a container that looks conveniently finished rather than deliberately short.

Manufacturers publish capacities as a target with a dipstick range around it, not as a dose. The right sequence is to put in a little under the converted figure, run the engine to circulate it, let it drain back and then top up to the dipstick mark. That way the conversion gets you close and the measurement finishes the job — which is the correct division of labour between arithmetic and a physical gauge.

Why the jug sizes will never match the capacity

American motor oil is bottled in 1-quart bottles and 5-quart jugs; European oil is bottled in 1-litre, 4-litre and 5-litre containers. Neither range was designed to serve the other, so an engine specified in quarts and filled from metric containers always leaves something in the jug or needs a second one. That is a packaging fact rather than a conversion problem, and no arithmetic removes it.

It also means the leftover is worth keeping deliberately. A 5-litre jug against a 4.73-litre capacity leaves a quarter litre, which is roughly what an engine consumes between services on many cars, so the remainder is the top-up bottle you would otherwise buy. Where the capacity is 6 or 7 quarts — 5.68 or 6.62 litres — the arithmetic decides whether one jug or two is the smaller waste.

Coolant, transmission and brake fluid carry the same gap

Every fluid in an American service schedule is in quarts, and each converts identically: 2 quarts is 1.89 litres, 3 is 2.84, 12 is 11.36. Coolant adds a second step, because the figure usually refers to the finished 50/50 mixture rather than to concentrate — so a 9-quart system is 8.52 litres of mixture, made from 4.26 of concentrate and the same again of deionised water.

Brake fluid is the one where precision is cheapest and matters most. A quart bottle is 946 ml and a metric one is 500 ml or 1 litre, and a bleed uses far less than a bottle, so the conversion is only about buying enough. The rule that survives the unit change is the one about the container: once opened, brake fluid takes up moisture from the air, and a part-used bottle is not a stock item.

Quart cartons on a metric shelf

American stock, broth, buttermilk and cream are packed in quarts, so the carton is 946 ml and the metric equivalent is a round litre. Where the recipe’s liquid is doing structural work rather than merely covering something, measure rather than pour the carton in.

The quart that is a fifth bigger, and where it turns up

An imperial quart is 1136.5225 ml against the US quart’s 946.35 — the same 20% that separates the two gallons and the two pints, since a quart is a quarter of a gallon in both systems. It appears in British sources predating metrication and in Canadian ones predating 1970s metrication, and in both cases it will be written as nothing more than "quart".

The tell is usually the surrounding units rather than the word. A document quoting imperial gallons, pints of 20 fluid ounces, or fuel economy in miles per imperial gallon means the imperial quart too. A US-market service manual, an American recipe or anything with a 128-fluid-ounce gallon in it means the one on this page. When the source is genuinely unclear, the millilitre figure — if there is one — settles it immediately.

A quarter of a gallon, halving all the way down

The customary volumes are a chain of doublings and the quart sits in the middle of it: a gallon is 4 quarts, a quart is 2 pints, a pint is 2 cups, a cup is 8 fluid ounces. Every one of those is exact, which is why an American figure can be moved up and down the ladder in your head without any arithmetic worth the name.

The metric side has the same property and the two chains never meet. 0.946 litres halves to 0.473 and again to 0.237 and again to 0.118, all as exact and all as untidy. That is the real cost of the two systems coexisting: each is internally clean, the bridge between them is a long decimal, and every crossing carries the decimal along with it.

Servicing a US-market vehicle outside the United States

A car built for the American market carries American service data, and every fluid in it is in quarts even when the vehicle is standing in a metric workshop. The oil capacity usually appears twice — with a filter change and without — and the two differ by a few tenths of a quart, which is 200 to 500 ml. Converting the wrong one of the two is a larger error than any rounding of the factor.

Where the same model is sold in both markets, the manufacturer publishes both figures and they are the same engine described twice. That makes the European manual the better source when it exists: it removes the conversion entirely and it states the capacity in the units the jug on the shelf is labelled in. Where it does not exist, convert the quart figure and then confirm on the dipstick, in that order.

Reading quarts as litres at a glance

The correction is small, constant and always downward, which makes it the easiest of the volume conversions to carry in your head.

That closeness is also the trap. A quart and a litre are near enough to be treated as the same thing in conversation and far enough apart to matter in a crankcase, a cooling system or a reduction.
