A quart is a quarter of a gallon, which is where the name comes from. Like the pint and the gallon it carries the US-versus-imperial difference with it.

A US pint is 473 ml and an imperial pint is 568 ml — a fifth larger. This is the single most consequential difference between the two systems for anybody following a recipe or ordering a drink.

A US quart is exactly 2 US pints

Going this way is a multiplication, and by a whole number: one US quart is 2 US pints, exactly, and 2 is the definition rather than a measurement that came close.

That makes it one of the few conversions worth doing in your head, and it makes the answer checkable: divide back and you must land on the number you started with, exactly, with no remainder to explain away.

Check which US quart you mean

The US quart is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 2 pt; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 2.4019 pt — larger by 20.1 %.

That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.

A quart splits in two, and the word says which two

A quart is a quarter of a gallon, which is where the name comes from, and it halves into two pints without any of the awkwardness the rest of the ladder carries. That is the whole conversion, and it is worth stating plainly because the mistakes here are never arithmetic. They are a halving applied in the wrong direction, which turns three quarts into a pint and a half instead of six pints — an error of four, produced by a factor of two.

The check that catches it is fluid ounces. A quart is 32 fluid ounces and a pint is 16, so the pint number must always be the larger one. Any conversion out of quarts into a smaller unit produces a bigger number, and a result that came out smaller has been run backwards regardless of how confident the arithmetic felt.

Portioning soup and stock into pint containers

The pint is the working portion for anything frozen in a domestic kitchen. It is roughly one generous serving or two modest ones, it thaws in a reasonable time, and it stacks. A batch of three quarts is six pints, which is six meals or three, and that count is usually the real reason somebody wants the conversion — not the volume, but how many nights it covers.

Smaller containers also thaw faster, which matters more than the arithmetic suggests. A quart of stock frozen solid takes hours to become usable and cannot be divided while it is a block; the same quart as two pints gives a choice at the point of use. Freezing in the largest container that fits the volume is the intuitive move and almost always the wrong one.

Water gains about nine per cent when it freezes

Ice is less dense than the water it came from — about 0.917 grams per cubic centimetre against 0.9998 — which means a given quantity of water takes up roughly nine per cent more room once frozen. A quart of stock becomes about 2.2 pints of ice, and a pint container filled level has nowhere to put the difference.

That is why a container filled to the brim splits and a glass jar filled to its shoulder cracks. The practical allowance is around a tenth of the volume: leave an inch at the top of a pint container, more in a tall narrow one than in a wide shallow one, because the expansion can only go upward and a narrow column has further to travel. Salted or sugared liquids expand slightly less, which is a reason to be generous rather than to cut it fine.

Pitchers, glasses and pouring a quart out

A quart pitcher gives two pint glasses, or four half-pint tumblers, and it is one of the few divisions where the container sizes and the ladder agree exactly. That agreement is not accidental: US glassware was sized against the same customary volumes, so a pint glass, a two-cup jug and a half-quart measure are the same vessel in three different rooms of a house.

Where it stops being exact is that nothing is poured to the brim. A pint glass filled to a pouring level takes closer to 14 fluid ounces than 16, so a quart pitcher gives two comfortable glasses with a little left, not two full ones. Anyone dividing a quart for guests should plan on the pour rather than the arithmetic.

Paint and stain: the quart you buy and the pint you decant

Paint comes in gallons, quarts and pints, and the reason to divide a quart down is usually working practice rather than storage. Decanting a pint into a smaller pot means less to carry up a ladder, less surface exposed to air, and a tin that can be closed while the rest stays sealed. Two pints out of a quart is the split that leaves half untouched.

Coverage figures stay with the gallon, so dividing has to be done twice. Manufacturers generally quote somewhere around 350 to 400 square feet per gallon on a smooth surface, which makes a quart roughly 90 to 100 and a pint about 45 to 50 — before anything is lost to a textured wall, a roller tray or a second coat. The volume conversion is exact and the coverage one never is.

Odd quantities, and the carton that is not a half gallon

Not every quantity on a US shelf sits on a rung. Ice cream is the clearest case: the carton that was once a half gallon — four pints — is now commonly a quart and a half, or three pints, in a box shaped much like the original. Converting the label figure rather than assuming the container settles it, and it is the reason a recipe written against an old half-gallon carton comes up short.

The same applies to anything sold in a 1.5 quart or 1.75 quart size. Three pints and three and a half pints are both perfectly ordinary volumes and neither has a container name, so the label states a decimal quart and leaves the reader to divide it. Reading those back into pints is the quickest way to know how many portions are actually in the box.

Wide and shallow beats tall and narrow

Two pint containers hold the same volume whatever their shape, and they do not behave the same way. A wide shallow pint has far more surface area than a tall narrow one, so it cools faster, freezes faster and thaws faster — which is why food-safety guidance on cooling large batches is always about dividing them into shallow containers rather than about the total volume.

That makes the shape of the container part of the conversion decision rather than a detail after it. A quart of hot stock left whole can sit for hours in the temperature range where it should not; the same quart split into two shallow pints is through it in a fraction of the time. Splitting into pints is done for the speed at least as often as for the portion size.

Where the halving does not apply at all

Two pints to a quart holds within a system and never across one. An imperial quart divides into two imperial pints of 568 ml each, not into US pints of 473 — so a British recipe yielding a quart is 2.4 US pints, and treating it as two leaves a fifth of the batch unaccounted for. The ratio survives the crossing; the sizes do not.

Dry measure is the other exception. Produce sold by the pint uses the US dry pint of 550.6 ml, and two of those make a dry quart of 1.101 litres rather than the 946 ml liquid quart this page converts. Two to one is still correct, but a liquid quart cannot be poured into two produce pints and a dry quart is not two pints of stock.
