Two pints make a quart, which is the shortest step on the customary volume ladder and the one most often taken in the wrong direction. Converting pints to quarts is usually a consolidation question — how many quart containers a stack of pints will fill, or whether the larger size is worth buying — rather than a measurement one.

Convert pt to qt
A US pint is 473 ml and an imperial pint is 568 ml — a fifth larger. This is the single most consequential difference between the two systems for anybody following a recipe or ordering a drink.
A quart is a quarter of a gallon, which is where the name comes from. Like the pint and the gallon it carries the US-versus-imperial difference with it.
Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 2 of these fit into one US quart with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a US quart, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.
Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.
The US pint is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 0.5 qt; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 0.60047 qt — larger by 20.1 %.
That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.
A factor of two ought to be the easiest conversion on the site, and it is the one most reliably got backwards. The reason is that the pint has no measuring equipment behind it: cups and quarts are both marked on a standard jug, while the pint exists as a container, a glass and a word. A rung with nothing to grip on is a rung the hand slides past, and the result is a quart figure that is out by a factor of four rather than two, because the missing doubling gets applied the wrong way.
Holding the whole ladder is the defence. Two cups to a pint, two pints to a quart, four quarts to a gallon — 16, 32 and 128 fluid ounces respectively. A pint total can then be checked at two points instead of one: five pints should be 80 fluid ounces and should also be two and a half quarts, and if those two routes disagree the error is visible immediately.
The practical version of this conversion is counting a shelf. Six pint tubs of stock is three quarts, which is one quart short of a gallon and fits a six-quart pot with room to spare. Nine pints is four quarts and a pint, which is where the arithmetic stops being tidy and the odd container has to go somewhere.
Consolidating is rarely lossless in practice. Every transfer leaves a film behind, and six pints poured into three quart jars reliably comes up a little short of three full jars — enough to notice, not enough to matter, unless the recipe downstream is a ratio. Where the total feeds a ratio, measure the consolidated volume after the transfer rather than trusting the count of what went in.
Two pints and a quart are the same volume and rarely the same price. Packaging cost scales with surface area rather than contents, so a quart container uses appreciably less material than two pints holding the same amount, and the shelf price usually reflects it. US shelf labels generally carry a unit price, and the comparison worth making is per fluid ounce rather than per container.
The case for pints is not price but waste. Cream, stock and anything else that spoils once opened is cheaper by the quart and more expensive in practice if half of it is thrown away. Two pints is a quart that can be opened twice, and for a household that uses a cup a week it is the smaller total cost even at the worse unit price.
Cookware is sold in quarts and older recipes give liquid in pints, which is the mismatch this conversion usually resolves. Seven pints of stock is three and a half quarts, and the pot that wants is a six-quart, not a four — leaving a pot a third empty is what stops a starchy liquid climbing out of it when it catches a rolling boil.
The same headroom rule applies at the other end of the process. A batch that reduces from seven pints to five is two and a half quarts, and it now fits containers that it did not fit before. Reductions are the one place where converting twice is worth the effort, because the volume that determines the pot and the volume that determines the storage are different numbers.
Paint follows the same ladder and uses it differently. The gallon and the quart are the working sizes, and the pint exists for trim, touch-ups and sample pots — quantities where a quart would be more than a small job could use before the tin skinned over. Two pints of the same colour is a quart of coverage, and coverage is quoted per gallon, so a pint total has to climb two rungs before it can be compared against a wall.
Mixing pints into a quart is also how colour consistency is preserved. Tinted paint varies slightly between batches, and combining what will be needed into a single larger vessel before starting — boxing, in trade usage — removes a visible line between the first coat and the second. The conversion is the trivial part; the reason for doing it is that the paint has to be one batch.
Half a quart is a pint, and that is the only fraction of a quart with a name anybody uses. This makes odd totals easier to handle than they look: five pints is two quarts and a pint, eleven pints is five quarts and a pint. Expressed as decimals — 2.5 and 5.5 quarts — those same figures describe a container size that does not exist.
Quarter quarts have no name because they already had one further down the ladder: a quarter of a quart is a cup. So a total that lands between rungs is best read downward rather than as a fraction upward. Three and three quarter quarts is seven pints and a cup, and that is a sentence somebody can act on with the equipment in their kitchen.
The dairy aisle is the one place where the whole ladder is visible at once, and it is the easiest way to learn the ratios by sight. Cream comes in half pints and pints, milk in pints, quarts, half gallons and gallons, and buttermilk almost always in the quart. Standing in front of them, two pints to a quart and four quarts to a gallon stop being arithmetic and become the sizes of the cartons.
It is also where the conversion is most often wanted in the other direction from a recipe. A recipe calling for three pints of milk is a quart and a pint — one large carton and one small — rather than any single container on the shelf. Converting to quarts before shopping is what turns a recipe quantity into a list of things that actually exist.
Eight pints to the gallon is the anchor worth carrying, because it turns any pint figure into a rough size instantly. Twelve pints is a gallon and a half; twenty pints is two and a half gallons; three pints is not far off a litre and a half. Halving the pint figure gives quarts and halving twice more gives gallons, which is three easy steps rather than one awkward division.
The check that catches real mistakes is the fluid ounce one. Multiply pints by 16 and quarts by 32, and the two totals must agree. A pint figure that has silently been treated as a quart figure fails that test by exactly a factor of two, which is the error this page exists to prevent and the only one that ever really happens here.

Read the remainder as a pint rather than as a decimal. Five pints is two quarts and a pint, which is easier to act on than 2.5 quarts because pint containers exist and half-quart ones do not. The only fraction of a quart with a name of its own is the pint.
Not on the liquid scale this page uses. Produce is sold by the US dry pint of 550.6 ml, about 16 per cent larger than the liquid pint, and two of them make a dry quart rather than a liquid one. The ratio is the same; the units underneath it are not.
One qt is 2 pt. It is the same relationship read backwards, so an answer from one page put through the other has to come back to where it started.
