Convert cm to yd
Centimetres are the everyday metric length — body measurements, paper, furniture — and they are the one metric unit that has no direct customary counterpart, which is why so much converting happens through them.
A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.
The factor is 0.010936, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.0109 it is off by 0.33 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 cm.
That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.
The yard has been defined in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, and in this page's units that comes out at 91.44 cm to one. The definition is exact by stipulation — it was not measured, and it cannot be refined by measuring it better. The decimal above is the whole of it, with nothing rounded away at the end.
Before that agreement the US and the British versions differed slightly, and old survey figures still carry the older definition. For anything outside land surveying the difference is far below the precision anybody is working to.
The conversion itself is one number: 91.44 cm to the yard, exact by definition because a yard is 36 inches and an inch is exactly 2.54 cm. Going the other way, a metre is 1.0936 yards. The practical consequence is that a metre and a yard are close enough to be confused and far enough apart that the confusion costs 8.56 cm on every unit ordered.
For a single metre that is a hand span of fabric. For a curtain job needing twelve metres it is a metre of missing cloth, and the missing metre appears at the end, after everything has been cut. This is why the conversion is worth doing at the order rather than at the cutting table, where the only remaining option is to buy more from a different dye lot.
Fabric is one of the last consumer goods sold in two different units depending on which country the shop is in. European and Japanese suppliers cut by the metre; American, and much of the British trade, cuts by the yard. The bolt is often the same bolt from the same mill, and the difference is entirely in how the counter measures it.
That makes price comparison misleading in a specific direction. A fabric at fifteen units per yard is not cheaper than the same fabric at sixteen per metre — per unit length it is dearer, because the yard is nine per cent less cloth. Convert both to the same unit before comparing, and convert the length before the currency, because the unit difference is larger than most exchange-rate margins.
Cloth has two dimensions and only one of them is being sold. European bolts are commonly 140 or 150 cm wide. American quilting cotton is 44 or 45 inches, which is 111.8 or 114.3 cm; upholstery and home decorating fabric runs 54 inches, or 137.2 cm. Converting the length and ignoring the width is how a pattern that fits on one bolt fails to fit on another.
The number that actually matters is area. A metre of 150 cm fabric is 1.5 square metres; a yard of 45-inch fabric is 1.045 square metres, less than three quarters as much. A pattern written for wide European cloth can need half as much again in yards of narrow American cloth, and no amount of care with the linear conversion will reveal that — the layout has to be checked against the width.
Patterns state their requirements in the unit of the country they were published in, and the conversion has to happen before the order rather than at the cutting table. Three metres is 3.28 yards; four metres is 4.37; two and a half is 2.73. None of these lands on a fraction a shop will cut, so each one has to be rounded up to the next quarter or eighth the counter sells in.
The failure is rounding down because the number looked close. Three metres ordered as three yards is 25.7 cm short — a facing, a pocket, the last strip of a border — and the shortfall does not appear until the pieces are laid out. Where a pattern lists several separate lengths, convert and round each one rather than converting the total, because rounding the total down takes the shortfall out of whichever piece is cut last.
Anything priced by area needs the conversion applied twice. One square metre is 1.196 square yards, and one square yard is 0.8361 square metres. Using the linear factor of 1.094 on an area understates it by about nine per cent, which on a room-sized carpet order is a whole roll end.
The check that catches it is to convert both sides and multiply. A room 4 m by 5 m is 20 m²; in yards it is 4.37 by 5.47, which is 23.9 square yards — and 20 × 1.196 is the same 23.9. If the two routes disagree, the linear factor has been used on an area somewhere. The same rule applies to any price quoted per square unit, including tiling, turf and wallpaper coverage.
Broadloom carpet is manufactured at a handful of widths and those widths were chosen by the loom rather than by the room. American rolls are 12 feet, which is 365.76 cm, and 15 feet, or 457.2 cm. European rolls are 4 m and 5 m. Between 365.76 and 400 there is a 34-centimetre gap, and it decides whether a four-metre room takes one piece or two.
That is the number to convert first when a carpet is being specified across systems. A room quoted as 380 cm wide is inside a 4 m roll and outside a 12-foot one, so the same room is seamless in Europe and seamed in the United States. Vinyl and linoleum sheet behave the same way, with 2 m and 4 m metric widths against 6 and 12 feet.
Cloth is the one material on this site where rounding down is never defensible. It cannot be joined invisibly, the next roll is a different dye lot, and pattern repeat means the usable length is shorter than the measured length by up to one repeat on every piece. Convert precisely, then add rather than round to the nearest.
A workable habit is to convert, round up to the supplier fraction, and add one repeat length if the fabric has a pattern. Two and a half metres becomes 2.73 yards, which becomes three yards; a 30 cm repeat adds a third of a yard on top. The extra costs a few centimetres of cloth at the counter, which is the cheapest insurance anywhere in the whole job.
91.44, exactly. A yard is 36 inches and an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so the figure is a definition rather than a measured length. A metre of the same fabric is 100 cm, or 1.094 yards, which means a metre gives you 8.56 cm more cloth than a yard does.
3.28 yards, so order three and a half. Ordering three yards leaves you 25.7 cm short, which is enough to lose a sleeve or a border. Suppliers who cut by the yard usually cut in quarters or eighths, so round up to the next fraction they will sell rather than to the nearest.
It converts with the same factor and it does not mean the same thing. A European bolt is typically 140 or 150 cm wide; American quilting cotton is 44 or 45 inches, which is 112 to 114 cm, and home decorating fabric is 54 inches, or 137 cm. A yard of the narrow American cloth contains far less fabric than a metre of the wide European one, and the length conversion alone will not tell you that.
Square the factor rather than using it directly. One square metre is 1.196 square yards, so a price per square metre divides by 1.196 to become a price per square yard. Using the linear 1.094 instead overstates the metric price by about nine per cent, which is the commonest arithmetic mistake in carpet quotations.
Because several of them were designed in feet. American broadloom is woven at 12 and 15 feet, which are 3.66 m and 4.57 m, while European looms run at 4 m and 5 m. A room that a 4 m roll covers seamlessly may need a join in 12-foot carpet, and the conversion is what tells you before the carpet arrives.
Up, every time. Cloth cannot be added after it is cut, pattern repeats waste more than the arithmetic predicts, and most shrinkage happens on the first wash. Rounding 2.7 yards to 2.5 saves a fifth of a yard and risks the whole project; rounding it to 3 costs a few centimetres of cloth.
