A US pint is 473 ml and an imperial pint is 568 ml — a fifth larger. This is the single most consequential difference between the two systems for anybody following a recipe or ordering a drink.
A litre is a thousand cubic centimetres. It is not strictly an SI unit — the SI unit of volume is the cubic metre — but it is accepted for use with SI and is what fuel, drinks and engines are measured in.
The factor is 0.473176, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 0.47 it is off by 0.67 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 pt.
That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.
The US pint is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 0.47318 l; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 0.56826 l — larger by 20.1 %.
That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.

The distinction is a survival of a system that measured wet and dry goods against different gallons. American ice cream is packed in pints and half-gallons because that is how the containers were tooled, so the same product exported or relabelled shows 473 ml, or a shrunk 460 or 465. A metric-native tub is 500 ml or a litre. When two tubs sit side by side at similar prices and one reads 473 and the other 500, that is a six per cent difference hiding in a number nobody reads.
The same happens with cream and stock. A US carton of heavy cream is a half-pint at 237 ml, a pint at 473 or a quart at 946; the metric equivalents are 250 ml, 500 ml and one litre. Substituting the metric size for the American one adds about five per cent every time, which is invisible in a sauce and visible in a set custard or a whipped-cream ratio.
A pint is exactly two US cups, so an American recipe that calls for a pint of anything is asking for the same volume as one asking for two cups — 473 ml. The choice between the two wordings is usually about the container rather than the quantity: a recipe says "a pint of cream" when you will buy a pint of cream, and "two cups" when you will measure it out of something larger.
That makes the pint the more forgiving of the two in one specific way. A cup is a scooped measure and its accuracy depends on how the ingredient is packed; a pint is normally a container you empty. For anything compressible — and flour is the standard example, running from about 120 g a cup spooned to 150 g scooped — buying by the pint removes a much larger error than the conversion introduces.
"A pint’s a pound the world around" is an American mnemonic and it is true to about four per cent: a US pint of water is 473 g, or 1.043 lb. It stops working the moment the pint is imperial, because 568 g is 1.25 lb — which is why the British version of the same saying is "a pint of pure water weighs a pound and a quarter", and why the two rhymes cannot both be shortened to the same thing.
It stops working entirely for anything other than water. A pint of honey is about 700 g, a pint of oil about 435 g, a pint of flour a little over 260 g. Where a recipe’s outcome depends on the ratio rather than the volume — bread, pastry, anything set with gelatine or eggs — the metric figure to carry across is the mass, and the volume conversion is only the route to finding it.
Multiplying an American quantity by 0.473 gives a shopping list of awkward numbers: three pints of stock is 1.42 litres, five pints of milk is 2.37. The practical move is to convert the whole recipe once, round each line to what the shop actually sells, and then check that the rounding has not changed a ratio — a stew tolerates an extra 80 ml of stock, a batter does not.
Where a recipe is being doubled or halved as well, do the scaling in metric and convert only at the end. Converting first and then doubling doubles the rounding too, and pints are the unit where that shows up fastest because so many American quantities are whole pints. One conversion, one rounding, at the last possible step.
Three pints are in circulation and only one of them is on this page. The US liquid pint of 473.2 ml is here; the US dry pint of 550.6 ml belongs to produce; the imperial pint of 568.3 ml belongs to Britain and Ireland and is the largest of the three. A quantity that comes out about a fifth short of what a recipe seemed to promise has almost always crossed one of those boundaries.
Provenance settles it more reliably than arithmetic. American sources mean the liquid pint unless the thing being measured is a fruit or a vegetable. British and Irish sources mean the imperial pint. Australian, Canadian and New Zealand sources generally give millilitres outright, which is the reason those recipes travel better than either of the others.
Halve the number of pints and take a twentieth off. Six pints is 3 less 0.15, so about 2.85 litres against 2.839. Ten pints is 5 less 0.25, so 4.75 against 4.732. The correction is small because 0.473 is close to a half, and it is worth applying because it always runs the same way — a converted figure that has not been corrected is always slightly too big.
Two anchors cover most shopping. A pint is a shade under half a litre, and a quart — two pints — is a shade under one. Anything quoted in whole pints can therefore be read straight off as "a bit under half that many litres", which is enough to tell whether a metric package will cover an American quantity. The field above carries the exact figure when the answer has to hold up.
