Converting PPS to PDF turns a self-running slideshow into something you can read. A `.pps` is a PowerPoint file whose extension tells the program to go straight to full screen instead of the editor, which is why it is awkward to skim, print or keep. A PDF gives one page per slide at the deck’s own proportions, with the timings, transitions and sound left behind.

PPS to PDF
A `.pps` announces itself. You double-click it expecting a document and the machine goes black, then full screen, then starts advancing on somebody else’s schedule. There is no scroll bar, no page count, no way to go back three slides to reread the one with the numbers on it, and pressing Escape ends the whole thing. For a presentation being given that is exactly right; for a file arriving in your inbox it is the wrong shape entirely.
That difference is the whole of the format. The registry records PPS with `editable: false` and its use as delivery, and both are descriptions of intent rather than of any lock in the file — the bytes are a PowerPoint presentation and nothing else. The extension is an instruction to the program about how to open it. Converting to PDF replaces that instruction with the one you actually wanted: show me the slides, and let me decide when to move.
Three sources account for almost all of them. The first is genuine self-running delivery: a supplier’s product walkthrough, a training module, a kiosk display, a deck an organiser wants shown without anybody touching a keyboard. The second is habit — a presenter who saves as `.pps` so the deck starts cleanly on a strange laptop, then emails the same file afterwards to everyone who asked for a copy.
The third is the long tail of forwarded email. PPS was the standard container for the illustrated slideshow that circulated by attachment through the 2000s: photographs with captions, inspirational sequences, family collections, charity appeals. Those files are still being forwarded, often now as the only surviving copy of something somebody made twenty years ago, and turning one into a PDF is frequently an act of preservation rather than convenience.
Two routes work and both rely on the same fact. Open PowerPoint or LibreOffice Impress first and use File, Open — a program that is already running does not honour the extension’s instruction the way the shell does, and the deck appears in the editor. Or rename the file from `.pps` to `.ppt` and open that; since the contents are identical, nothing is being tricked and nothing is at risk.
Both assume you have a presentation program installed, which is the case this conversion exists for. The registry lists Microsoft PowerPoint alone as software for PPS, and a great many people receiving one have no presentation software at all — a phone, a tablet, a locked-down machine, a computer bought with no office suite. A PDF opens on every one of those, which is why converting is a better answer than explaining the rename trick to somebody over the phone.
The export produces a page for each slide and sizes the page to the deck’s own dimensions. A modern 16:9 deck gives a wide, short page; a 2003-era 4:3 deck gives something close to a squat landscape page. Neither is A4, and neither should be — the PDF is a record of the slides rather than a document, and forcing a paper size onto it would either crop the slides or float them in white space.
That matters when the PDF is going to be printed. A printer asked for a 16:9 page on A4 will scale it down and leave wide bands top and bottom, which is fine for reference and wasteful for a handout. If printing is the aim, ask the print dialogue to fit to page and accept the margins, or produce a handout layout from the original deck instead. If the aim is reading on a screen, the native proportions are better than any paper size would be.
Everything that made the file a show rather than a document is a property of playback, and a PDF has no playback. Automatic advance timings go, which is the main thing people are trying to escape. Transitions between slides go. Animation and builds go, and a slide constructed as five clicks of a build arrives as one page with all five elements on it — usually legible, occasionally a pile of overlapping text where each stage was meant to replace the last.
Sound is the loss worth flagging separately, because narrated slideshows were common in exactly this format. A deck with a recorded voice track or a music bed loses it entirely, and there is nothing in a PDF that could carry it. If the narration is the content — a training module, a memorial slideshow, a talk recorded for people who could not attend — then a PDF preserves the pictures and discards the point, and the file should be kept as a PPS as well.
The registry dates the format to 1990 and marks it legacy, and most PPS files in circulation are considerably older than the software rendering them. The conversion runs through LibreOffice, which reads the binary PowerPoint format as a first-class filter, and the machine carries metric-compatible substitutes for the common Microsoft faces so that text boxes keep their line breaks.
The exposure is in what that era of PowerPoint drew with. Decks from 2003 lean on clip art, WordArt, gradient autoshapes and drawing objects that were rendered by a specific version of a specific program, and reproducing them exactly two decades later is an approximation rather than a copy. Expect the text and the photographs to be faithful and the decoration to be close. On a deck whose entire content is photographs with captions — which describes a great many forwarded slideshows — there is essentially nothing to go wrong.
The binary PowerPoint formats can carry macros, and for a long stretch of the 2000s a slideshow attachment was one of the most reliable ways to get code onto somebody’s machine. Mail filters and administrators learned that lesson thoroughly, which is why a `.pps` attachment is often quarantined and why some organisations block it outright regardless of who sent it.
A PDF cannot execute anything, and the conversion itself does not run whatever the file contains — the deck is handed to LibreOffice headless and rendered. That makes this a practical way to read a slideshow you have been forwarded from three addresses you do not recognise: convert it, read the PDF, and never open the original. It is also the right way to pass one on. Sending a colleague the PDF gets the content through the mail gateway; sending them the `.pps` mostly does not.

Rendering a PowerPoint file needs a real office engine, and this page says so plainly instead of implying that everything on this site runs on your own device. The file travels over an encrypted connection to a container running LibreOffice headless, and that container has no outbound internet access of its own — worth knowing for a file type with this particular history.
Each job gets its own scratch directory and its own LibreOffice profile, and the directory is deleted when the job finishes whatever the outcome. Anything still running after sixty seconds is terminated, which is a real consideration for old binary decks: LibreOffice tends to stop rather than fail on a malformed legacy file. The free tier accepts 25 MB per uploaded file, and a photograph-heavy slideshow from the age of email attachments is usually well under it.
If the slideshow has any value beyond its pictures, keep the original alongside the PDF. The PDF is the readable, printable, forwardable version and it is not a complete record: the narration, the timings, the transitions and the order in which a built slide revealed itself are all gone, and nothing can reconstruct them from a stack of pages. For a supplier’s marketing deck that is irrelevant. For something a person made, it is not.
Where the deck needs to be usable again rather than only readable, convert it to PPTX instead and keep that: it is an editable, current format that PowerPoint, Impress and Keynote all open, and it preserves the slides as slides. The PDF is the right output for reading, printing, filing and sending. The PPTX is the right output for reviving. Producing both from the same `.pps` takes two minutes and settles the question permanently.

A presentation becomes one page per slide. Transitions, builds and speaker notes have nowhere to go in PDF; what survives is each slide as it looks when it has finished animating.
Both PPS and PDF hold several pages, so a multi-page document stays one file.
PDF opens in every current browser. PPS has narrower browser support than that. If the file is going onto a web page or into a form, that is usually the whole reason for the conversion.
