A tonne is 1,000 kilograms, and it is not the same as either the US short ton (907 kg) or the UK long ton (1,016 kg). Where the difference matters, this one is sometimes written "metric ton".
A stone is fourteen pounds, and it is used for body weight in Britain and Ireland and essentially nowhere else — which is why an American reading a British weight usually needs this conversion.
The factor is 157.473044, and almost nobody carries that around. Rounded to 157 it is off by 0.3 % — which stays invisible on small numbers and turns into a whole unit somewhere around 1,000 t.
That is the number worth knowing before you round: not the error itself, but where it stops being ignorable. Below that point the shorter factor is the sensible one; above it, use the field above, which never rounds until it prints.

A stone is exactly 14 pounds, and the pound has been fixed in metric terms since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959. The stone never received a metric definition of its own; it inherits the pound's, 14 times over. That is also where you meet it — Britain and Ireland quote body weight this way and almost nowhere else does, so a figure in stone has usually crossed a border to reach you.
The reason this conversion produces an ugly number is that the stone and the metric tonne come from unrelated systems. Within imperial units the arithmetic is clean: fourteen pounds to the stone, eight stone to the hundredweight, twenty hundredweight to the ton, which is 160 stone and 2,240 lb exactly. Every step is a whole number chosen to fit the step below it.
The tonne is 1,000 kg, defined with no reference to any of that, and it lands at 157.473 stone. The 2.5 stone between the two is about 16 kg — a difference small enough that a British source using "ton" loosely for a tonne is usually harmless, and large enough that a document adding up hundreds of them is not.
Imperial mass was a chain rather than a set of independent units. A pound, fourteen pounds to the stone, two stone to the quarter, four quarters — 112 lb — to the hundredweight, twenty hundredweight to the ton. Each rung is a handleable multiple of the one below, which is what a system designed around what a person can lift and a cart can carry looks like.
That explains the numbers that look arbitrary in isolation. 2,240 is not a strange choice for a ton; it is what 14 × 8 × 20 comes to, and the strangeness is inherited from the stone at the bottom. It also explains why the stone survived when the quarter and the hundredweight did not: the body weights people quote sit naturally in the ten-to-twenty range of one rung, and nothing else on the ladder had a daily use to keep it alive.
The United States kept the names and broke the chain. A short hundredweight is a literal 100 lb, and twenty of them make the 2,000 lb short ton — round in pounds, and 142.857 stone, which is 1,000/7 and no kind of round at all. The imperial hundredweight of 112 lb is exactly eight stone and exactly 50.80 kg.
So a document quoting hundredweight carries the same ambiguity as one quoting tons, from the same cause. American agricultural prices per hundredweight mean 100 lb; British and older Commonwealth figures mean 112. Between the two that is a twelve per cent difference on a per-unit price, which is larger than the ton ambiguity and considerably less well known.
The honest everyday use of this conversion is illustration. A tonne is 157 stone, which is roughly fourteen adults at the eleven stone Britain treats as a middling weight — and that is a picture, where "one thousand kilograms" is a number. Journalism, museum labels and safety briefings reach for the comparison for exactly this reason.
It works because the stone has a fixed reference in a British reader’s head and the kilogram, for the same reader, often does not. Somebody who knows their own weight in stone and could not state it in kilograms has a ruler for one unit and not the other, which is a fact about vocabulary rather than about arithmetic and is the whole reason this page exists.
Older British material — shipping records, agricultural returns, engineering handbooks, anything before the 1970s — uses the long ton, and the same publications now use the tonne without always saying which changed when. A figure of "twenty tons" is 20,320 kg if it is old and 20,000 kg if it is recent, a 1.6 per cent difference that compounds across a table.
The check is the same one that works for the American short ton: convert and look for the round number. A tonnage that is round in tonnes was written in tonnes; one that is round in hundredweight or in stone came off the imperial ladder. Where a source gives both a ton figure and a stone or hundredweight one, the relationship between them settles it — 160 stone to the ton means long, and nothing else does.
The compound form does not stop working at large numbers, it only stops being used. 3 t is 472.419 stone, which is 472 stone 6 lb once the 0.419 is multiplied by 14. The arithmetic is identical to the one a body weight needs and the result is a figure nobody would say out loud, which is a decent argument for leaving a bulk answer as a decimal.
Where the compound form does earn its place is at the small end of a bulk range, in the two-to-twenty stone band where the numbers overlap with things people lift. A load quoted as 12 stone 4 is legible; the same load as 78.02 kg is precise and, to a reader who thinks in stone, silent.

472.42 stone, which is 472 stone 6 lb: keep the whole stone and multiply the remainder by 14, since 0.42 × 14 is 5.9. The compound form is rarely used at this size, but the arithmetic is the same one a body weight needs.
About fourteen adults, if an adult is taken at the eleven stone Britain uses as its rough middle. A tonne is 157 stone and 157 divided by 11 is a little over 14 — which is the only sense in which converting a tonne to stone tells anybody anything they did not know.
