Yard and Mile

A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.

A mile is 1,760 yards — a number that comes from a Roman thousand paces, adjusted by an Elizabethan statute to fit the furlong. It is exactly 1,609.344 metres.

It takes 1,760 yards to make a mile

Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 1,760 of these fit into one mile with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a mile, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.

Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.

One thousand seven hundred and sixty, and the furrow behind it

The number is not a design decision. A furlong was the length of a furrow a team of oxen ploughed before turning, standardised at 220 yards, and English fields were laid out in them long before anybody needed a mile. When the Roman mile arrived it was near enough to eight furlongs to be called one, and rather than redraw every field boundary in the country the mile was adjusted to fit: eight times 220, so 1,760 yards.

That is why the fractions are clean and the total is not. Halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths of a mile all come out as whole yards — 880, 440, 220, 110 — because they were the units the mile was assembled from. Thirds and sevenths do not, which is a fair test of whether a distance was inherited or invented.

The 440, the 880 and the track that went metric

For most of the twentieth century American and British tracks were 440 yards round, and the race distances were fractions of a mile: the 220, the 440, the 880, the mile itself. Those are 220, 440, 880 and 1,760 yards, and every one of them converts to a fraction with nothing left over, which is exactly why they were chosen.

The switch to 400-metre tracks broke the arithmetic without breaking the names. A 400-metre lap is 437.4 yards, so the modern quarter is two and a half yards short of the old one, the 800 is about five short of the 880, and the records from the two eras are not directly comparable. Converting an old yard distance to miles is often the only way to see what a historical time actually represents.

Four laps is not a mile

Four laps of lane one is 1,600 metres, which is 1,749.8 yards. A mile is 1,760, so four laps falls about 10.2 yards — 9.34 metres — short. Every track that hosts a mile race has a separate start line set back by that amount, and the distance is described as four laps plus nine metres for exactly this reason.

The gap matters more than it looks. Ten yards at a four-minute mile pace is about a second and a half, which is the margin most middle-distance races are decided by. A training log that counts four laps as a mile is understating the pace slightly and overstating the distance slightly, and over a season of interval work the two errors do not cancel.

A golf course measured in miles walked

A championship course is 7,000 to 7,300 yards, and since 7,040 yards is exactly four miles, the card is telling you the round is about four miles of golf ball travel. What it is not telling you is the walk, which includes every green-to-tee transfer, every trip to a bunker and every yard not spent on the line between tee and pin.

Measured with a step counter, an eighteen-hole round on a course of that length usually comes out at five to six miles. The conversion of the card yardage is a floor rather than an estimate, which is a useful thing to know before deciding whether to take a trolley — the difference between four miles and six is roughly forty minutes of walking.

Twenty-six miles and three hundred and eighty-five yards

The marathon is the clearest case of a distance that has to be quoted in two units because it is not a round number in either. Twenty-six miles is 45,760 yards; the extra 385 brings it to 46,145, which is 26.2188 miles or 42.195 kilometres. The distance was fixed at the 1908 London Olympics and made standard in 1921, and it has been carried unchanged ever since.

The 385 yards is about a fifth of a mile and takes a club runner roughly ninety seconds, which is why anybody who has run one is precise about the point two. Training distances are quoted in whole miles and the race is not, and that mismatch is felt at exactly the moment the mile markers run out.

Eight furlongs, and the racecourse that still counts them

Horse racing is the one sport that never stopped using the furlong, and it uses it as the primary unit. A six-furlong sprint is 1,320 yards or three quarters of a mile; a mile and a half is twelve furlongs, 2,640 yards. Course markers count down in furlongs from the start, so the commentary and the distance notation are in the same unit throughout.

It survives because the furlong is a useful size for the sport rather than out of sentiment. A furlong is about twelve seconds at racing pace, which makes it a natural unit for describing where in a race something happened, in the way that a lap is on a track. Converting a race distance to miles is for comparing across sports; within racing the furlong does the work.

Pace, splits and the yards inside a minute

Converting yardage to miles also converts it to time, once a pace is attached. At eight minutes to the mile a runner covers 220 yards a minute, which is a furlong; at six minutes it is 293 yards, and at ten it is 176. Those figures make a yardage legible without a watch — 1,000 yards at eight-minute pace is a little over four and a half minutes.

The same relationship turns an odd yardage into a split. A 600-yard repeat is 0.341 of a mile, so at seven-minute pace it should take about 2 minutes 23 seconds, and the arithmetic works in either direction. This is the practical reason to convert at all: the mile is the unit pace is expressed in, so any distance has to reach miles before it can be planned.

Why a certified course is measured slightly long

Road races are not measured with a tape or a satellite. A certified course is ridden on a bicycle fitted with a counter on the front wheel, calibrated before and after against a steel-taped baseline, following the shortest legal line a runner could take. Anything else — a hand-held device, a mapping tool, a car odometer — is an estimate, and the shortest possible route is what the distance has to be true along.

On top of that measurement sits a deliberate margin. Certification adds a short course prevention factor of one tenth of one per cent, so a course laid out as a mile is measured to about 1,761.8 yards and a marathon carries roughly 46 extra yards. The reasoning is asymmetric: a course measured slightly long is a fair race, while a course measured short invalidates every time set on it. So a yardage converted from a certified distance is a floor, and any watch reporting less than the advertised figure has cut the corners the measurer did not.
