Convert gal to fl oz
A US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, exactly — a definition that comes from an English wine gallon of 1707. The imperial gallon is 4.55 litres, about 20% larger.
A US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml; a UK one is 28.41 ml. They are different units with the same name, and recipes rarely say which they mean.
Going this way is a multiplication, and by a whole number: one US gallon is 128 US fluid ounces, exactly, and 128 is the definition rather than a measurement that came close.
That makes it one of the few conversions worth doing in your head, and it makes the answer checkable: divide back and you must land on the number you started with, exactly, with no remainder to explain away.
The US gallon is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 128 fl oz; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 153.72159 fl oz — larger by 20.1 %.
That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.
The number is the product of the ladder rather than a decision anybody made about gallons. Eight fluid ounces make a cup, two cups a pint, two pints a quart, four quarts a gallon: 8 × 2 × 2 × 4 = 128. Every rung is a halving or a quartering, which is what a system built for pouring rather than for arithmetic ends up looking like, and it is why 128, 64, 32 and 16 are all whole numbers on the way down.
The definition underneath is in cubic inches. A US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, a figure inherited from the English wine gallon of 1707, and dividing that by 128 gives a fluid ounce of exactly 1.8046875 cubic inches, or 29.5735295625 ml. The metric equivalents look untidy because nothing in the chain was ever chosen to suit them — the gallon is exact in inches and approximate in litres, at 3.785411784 L.
Dividing is the job most people are actually here for. A gallon is sixteen 8 oz glasses, about ten and two-thirds of the standard 12 fl oz cans, exactly six and two-fifths of a 20 fl oz bottle, and 7.57 of the 16.9 fl oz half-litre bottles. Only the first of those is clean, because 8 fluid ounces is a cup and the rest are container sizes that were set by something other than the gallon.
The same division catches people out with coffee. A drip machine sold as a 12-cup pot does not make 96 fluid ounces: its "cup" is rated at five or six fluid ounces, so a full pot is around 60 to 72 — well under a gallon, and roughly half of what the number on the box suggests. Whenever a serving count looks generous, check what the maker is calling a cup before trusting the arithmetic.
An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres against the US gallon's 3.785, and it contains 160 imperial fluid ounces rather than 128. Two things differ at once, which is what makes the comparison hard to hold in the head: the container is about 20 per cent larger, and the fluid ounce inside it is about 4 per cent smaller, at 28.4130625 ml against 29.5735295625.
That double difference is why the two gallons cannot be compared through their ounce counts. It is also why fuel economy figures never transfer: a car rated at 40 miles per imperial gallon is doing about 33 to the US gallon, and neither number is wrong. If a source is British, Canadian or older than the 1970s, assume the imperial gallon until something on the page says otherwise.
The fluid ounce measures space and the ounce measures mass, and the two only nearly agree. A US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.043 ounces, so a gallon of water comes to roughly 133.4 ounces — 8.34 pounds — rather than the eight pounds the shared word implies. The near-miss is an accident of history: it is the imperial gallon that was defined as ten pounds of water, in 1824, and the US kept the older wine gallon instead.
For anything that is not water the gap widens until the comparison is useless. A gallon of milk weighs about 8.6 pounds, a gallon of honey close to twelve, and a gallon of cooking oil about 7.6. When a shipping limit or a shelf rating is quoted in pounds, converting the gallons through 128 will give an answer that is wrong in a direction you cannot predict without knowing what is in the container.
The familiar package sizes are all rungs of the same ladder written in ounces: 64 fl oz is a half gallon, 32 a quart, 16 a pint, 8 a cup. A carton marked 64 FL OZ and one marked ½ GAL are the same thing, and the choice between them is usually a matter of which face of the box the printer had room on.
The fluid-ounce figure is also where shrinkage shows first, because it is the number a manufacturer can change without renaming the package. A juice carton that reads in the fifties of fluid ounces occupies the shelf space a half gallon used to, and an ice cream container labelled 1.5 quarts — 48 fluid ounces — sits where a half gallon of 64 once did. The gallon arithmetic is the fastest way to see how much is missing.
Concentrates almost always state their rate per gallon, and 128 is what makes those rates legible. One fluid ounce per gallon is a dilution of 1:128; two ounces is 1:64; four is 1:32. Cleaning products, lawn treatments, aquarium conditioners and photographic chemistry all use this scale, and the ounce is chosen as the dose unit precisely because a gallon divides into so many of them.
Mixing a smaller batch means dividing the dose by the same rung you divided the water. Half a gallon takes half the dose, a quart takes a quarter, a pint an eighth — so a rate of 2 fl oz per gallon becomes half a fluid ounce in a quart bottle, which is a tablespoon. Getting this wrong in the generous direction is the usual failure, and with a concentrate it is the expensive one.
Use 130 and take two off per gallon: 128 = 130 − 2, so three gallons is 390 − 6 = 384, and seven gallons is 910 − 14 = 896. Both are exact rather than approximate, which is unusual for a mental shortcut and worth the two seconds it takes.
To check an answer, walk back down the ladder by halving. 384 halved is 192, then 96, then 48 — three halvings from fluid ounces gives cups, so 384 fl oz is 48 cups, which is 24 pints, 12 quarts, 3 gallons. There are seven halvings between a fluid ounce and a gallon, since 128 is two to the seventh, and an answer that will not survive them has lost a factor of two somewhere — far and away the commonest error in this direction.
Seven and a half, near enough. 128 ÷ 16.9 = 7.57, so seven bottles leave about 9.7 fluid ounces short of a gallon and eight overshoot by 7.2. The 16.9 figure exists because the bottle is a half-litre — 500 ml is 16.907 US fluid ounces — so the awkward division is a metric bottle being counted in a customary container.
64. A half gallon is two quarts, four pints or eight cups, and every one of those routes lands on the same 64 because each rung of the ladder is a clean doubling. A quarter gallon is 32 fluid ounces, which is one quart.
