Convert pt to fl oz
A US pint is 473 ml and an imperial pint is 568 ml — a fifth larger. This is the single most consequential difference between the two systems for anybody following a recipe or ordering a drink.
A US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml; a UK one is 28.41 ml. They are different units with the same name, and recipes rarely say which they mean.
Going this way is a multiplication, and by a whole number: one US pint is 16 US fluid ounces, exactly, and 16 is the definition rather than a measurement that came close.
That makes it one of the few conversions worth doing in your head, and it makes the answer checkable: divide back and you must land on the number you started with, exactly, with no remainder to explain away.
The US pint is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 16 fl oz; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 19.2152 fl oz — larger by 20.1 %.
That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.
A US pint pours out as 16 fluid ounces, and the useful thing about that number is how many ways it divides. Two cups, four half-cup servings, eight two-ounce portions, sixteen single ounces. Almost every portion size an American recipe or label uses is a whole-number fraction of a pint, which is why the pint survives as a container size long after it stopped being a measure anybody keeps in a drawer.
The half pint follows for nothing: 8 fluid ounces, which is exactly one cup. That is why a half-pint carton of cream and a one-cup measure hold the same amount, and why a recipe calling for a cup of buttermilk is satisfied by half of the smallest carton on the shelf. Going the other way, two pints is 32 fluid ounces and has its own name, which is a quart.
Pouring a pint into equal parts is the commonest reason to reach for this conversion, and the arithmetic is easier if the target portion is named in ounces rather than as a fraction. Four fluid ounces is a small wine glass or a half-cup serving, and a pint gives four of them. Six fluid ounces is a coffee cup as a mug maker means it, and a pint gives two and two thirds — which is the point at which the remainder becomes the problem rather than the division.
Spirits are measured in ounces too, and the standard US pour is 1.5 fluid ounces, so a pint bottle carries a little over ten of them. That ratio is why the 750 ml bottle — 25.4 fluid ounces, about a pint and a half — is quoted as roughly seventeen drinks. None of these figures survive contact with a free pour, which is exactly why bars use a jigger.
The American mnemonic says a pint of water weighs a pound, and it very nearly does: a US pint is 473 ml, so a pint of water weighs about 473 grams, or 1.04 pounds. Four per cent over is close enough for a rhyme and close enough for most kitchen purposes, and it is a genuinely useful cross-check when a scale is available and a measure is not.
The rhyme does not travel. The British version is older and says a pint of pure water weighs a pound and a quarter, because an imperial pint is 568 ml and therefore weighs 1.25 pounds. Both rhymes are correct about their own pint, and either one applied to the other country’s pint is wrong by twenty per cent — which is a fair summary of the entire US-versus-imperial volume problem in one line.
A pint measured in Britain or Ireland is 20 imperial fluid ounces, and converting it into the US fluid ounces this page works in gives 19.2. That is not a rounding: the imperial ounce is 28.4130625 ml and the US one is 29.5735295625, so twenty imperial ounces of 28.41 ml come to 568 ml, which divided by the larger US ounce gives 19.2 of them.
The counter-intuitive part is that the imperial ounce is the smaller unit and the imperial pint is the larger one. Anyone reasoning from "their ounces are smaller, so their pint must be smaller" arrives at the wrong end of a twenty per cent gap. Where a source is British — a recipe, a drinks recipe, a beer measure — the pint figure has to be multiplied by 19.2 rather than 16 to land in US fluid ounces.
Much of what is sold in pints is sold that way because the container is a pint, not because anybody measured. Sour cream, heavy cream, ice cream, cherry tomatoes and takeaway soup all come in vessels whose capacity is nominally 16 fluid ounces, and the label states the number rather than the cook establishing it. Converting to fluid ounces in these cases is reading a design decision, not performing a measurement.
Which means the figure is nominal and the contents may not be. A pint tub filled to its shoulder holds less than its rated 16 fluid ounces, and one that has been opened and refrozen holds less still. Where the ounce figure feeds into something that has to balance — a recipe ratio, a dose, a dilution — measure the contents rather than trusting the number moulded into the lid.
Some pints are fixed by rule. A US whole-blood donation is drawn to somewhere around 450 to 500 ml and has been called a pint for so long that the word is what donors are told, though the collection is specified in millilitres rather than in ounces. Bowel preparations, oral rehydration and pre-operative fasting instructions are frequently written in pints for the same reason: it is a quantity patients can picture.
When such an instruction has to be executed against a measure marked in ounces, the safe reading is the smaller one. Sixteen fluid ounces satisfies any instruction phrased as a pint in the US, and a British instruction phrased as a pint wants 19.2. Where the instruction matters clinically, the millilitre figure is the one to ask for, because it is the only one of the three that means the same thing in both countries.
Double four times, or double once and multiply by eight — either route gets there and the intermediate numbers are useful. One doubling gives the figure in half-pints, which is to say cups: 3 pints is 6 cups is 48 fluid ounces. Working through cups is usually faster than multiplying by 16 directly, because recipes are written in cups and the middle number is often the one actually wanted.
For a rough check, a pint is a bit under half a litre and 16 fluid ounces is a bit under 500 ml. Any pint figure can be sanity-checked in litres at a glance: 5 pints is a little under two and a half litres, 10 pints is a little under five. The field above is exact, and the estimate exists to catch a misplaced digit rather than to replace it.
