Converting PPTX to ODP turns a PowerPoint deck into an OpenDocument presentation that LibreOffice Impress treats as its own: editable shapes, real text boxes, the speaker notes still attached. What changes is the structure behind the slides, where the two programs model masters differently.

PPTX to ODP
Most conversions out of a presentation end in a PDF, and a PDF is a decision that the deck is finished. This one is the opposite: what comes back is a working presentation, with editable shapes, real text boxes, movable images and slides you can reorder.
That changes what counts as success. Nobody inspects whether a PDF used the right placeholder, because nobody will ever type into it. Here it matters — a title has to still be a title placeholder rather than a floating box that happens to sit in the same place, or the next person to apply a design finds that half the deck ignores it. The distinction is invisible on screen and decides how much work the deck costs for the rest of its life, which is why this page spends its time on structure rather than on whether the slides look right when they first open.
PowerPoint attaches a set of layouts to one slide master: title slide, title and content, comparison, blank, and any custom ones a template author added. Impress works with a master per design and no equivalent hierarchy underneath it, so the two structures do not line up cleanly.
In practice a converted deck arrives with several masters where the original had one master and six layouts. The slides look right, and the tidy relationship between them is gone. For a deck you will maintain for years this is worth ten minutes: decide which masters you actually need, consolidate, and reapply, rather than adding a seventh master the first time you insert a slide. Do it before the first edit rather than after the twentieth. Reassigning slides to a tidied set of masters is a small job on a deck nobody has touched and a genuinely unpleasant one on a deck that three people have been adding to for a term.
PowerPoint themes are indirection. A shape is not blue; it is accent one, and the theme decides what accent one currently means, which is how swapping a theme restyles an entire deck at once. OpenDocument has no identical mechanism, so the conversion resolves the references and writes the concrete values.
The deck therefore looks exactly as it did and has lost the ability to be recoloured in a single action. If the file is a template that a team restyles per client or per campaign, this is the loss that matters most, and it is the argument for rebuilding the design in Impress rather than importing it. For a deck that will only be updated with new numbers each quarter, it costs nothing at all: the colours are correct and no longer swappable, and nobody was going to swap them.
SmartArt is a PowerPoint feature that generates a diagram from a list and re-lays it out whenever the list changes. There is no OpenDocument equivalent, so what comes across is the rendered result: a group of shapes with text in them, or in some cases a picture.
The slide is correct and the machinery is gone. Adding a seventh box to a six-box process no longer rebalances the diagram, and there is no outline pane behind it to edit. For a deck that will be revised, it is worth finding the SmartArt slides early and deciding whether to redraw them as native shapes now rather than fighting them later. They are easy to spot: a diagram whose boxes are all exactly the same size and evenly spaced was almost certainly generated rather than drawn, and hand-made diagrams have the small irregularities that give them away.
The outline view is how a long deck is actually restructured — promoting, demoting and reordering points without touching a single slide. It only works on text that lives in title and content placeholders, not on free-floating text boxes that look identical on screen.
Conversion generally preserves the distinction, but it is the first thing to verify on a deck you intend to rework: open the outline and see whether your slides are there. If a run of slides is missing from it, their text is in loose boxes, and the fastest fix is usually to retype the headings into proper placeholders before you go any further. It is worth doing even for a deck of thirty slides. The outline is also what accessibility tools and export routines read, so a presentation whose text lives in loose boxes is one that reads as empty to anything that is not a person looking at it.
A chart pasted from a spreadsheet may arrive as an editable Impress chart with its data behind it, or as an image, depending on how it was embedded in the first place. Tables normally survive as tables with their cells intact. Embedded worksheets are the least predictable case.
The check is quick: click each chart in the converted deck and see whether the data can be opened. If it can, the deck is fully maintainable. If it cannot, note where the underlying numbers live before the original PPTX is filed away somewhere nobody will find it, because a chart with no data behind it is a picture and will need remaking from scratch. The habit worth adopting for a deck you now own is to keep the numbers in a spreadsheet beside it rather than inside it. Charts embedded in slides are the single most common reason a presentation cannot be updated by anyone except the person who built it.
Slide text is sized to fit its box, so a substituted typeface with different metrics does not merely reflow a paragraph — it pushes a title onto two lines and over the subtitle beneath it. The consequences are visible immediately, which is at least better than a document where the same problem hides on page nine.
The conversion machine carries metric-compatible replacements for Arial, Times New Roman, Courier New, Calibri and Cambria, along with DejaVu and Noto for broader coverage. Decks in those faces hold their spacing. If the design uses a licensed corporate font, install it locally before opening the ODP, because the deck names the font and does not contain it.
Entrance and exit effects, emphasis, and slide transitions all exist in both programs and the common ones map across. What does not map cleanly are the elaborate cases: motion paths, chained triggers, effects timed against a media clip, and anything whose behaviour depended on a PowerPoint-specific option.
The only reliable test is running the deck rather than looking at the slides, because an animation that failed to convert leaves no visible trace on a static slide. Do that once, in Impress, before the first time you have to do it in front of an audience.
Converting between two presentation formats needs a presentation program, so this pair runs on a server rather than in your browser. The file travels over an encrypted connection to a container running LibreOffice headless, and the page says so instead of implying that everything here stays on your machine.
The container cannot open outbound connections. Each job is given its own scratch directory and its own LibreOffice profile, and that directory is removed when the job ends regardless of the outcome; a job still running after sixty seconds is terminated. The free limit is 25 MB per file, which decks reach through photographs and embedded video rather than through slide count.
If the deck is not yours to maintain — you were sent it to read, to review, or to present once — converting it buys nothing and costs the structure described above. Impress opens a PPTX directly and will show it perfectly well for that purpose.
Convert when you are taking the file over: you will be editing it repeatedly, it has to be stored in an open format, or the organisation has no PowerPoint licences. That is a decision about ownership rather than about compatibility, and it is the only one that justifies the tidying-up this conversion asks of you.
