Yard and Inch

A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.

An inch has been exactly 25.4 mm since 1959, when six countries agreed to stop using slightly different ones. Before that a US inch and a UK inch differed in the seventh significant figure: 25.400 05 mm against 25.400 00.

A yard is exactly 36 inches

Going this way is a multiplication, and by a whole number: one yard is 36 inches, exactly, and 36 is the definition rather than a measurement that came close.

That makes it one of the few conversions worth doing in your head, and it makes the answer checkable: divide back and you must land on the number you started with, exactly, with no remainder to explain away.

Thirty-six inches, and the width nobody quoted you

Multiplying by 36 gives the length of the piece and only the length. Two yards is 72 inches down the roll; across it you have whatever the bolt was, and that number was decided by the mill. The practical consequence is that a layout problem is almost never solved by buying more length — if a piece is 46 inches wide and the fabric is 44, no yardage fixes it.

Width is also why the same yardage behaves differently between two fabrics that look identical on the table. Sixty-inch knit at one yard gives 36 by 60; forty-five-inch cotton at one yard gives 36 by 45. The first will take two pieces side by side where the second takes one, and the difference in usable area is a third.

Laying pattern pieces out on a fixed width

Cutting layout is a packing problem in inches, run against a rectangle whose short side is fixed. Most pattern pieces have a grainline arrow that must run parallel to the selvedge, which removes rotation as an option and turns the whole thing into a question of how many pieces fit across the width and how many rows that makes down the length.

The arithmetic is worth doing before the scissors. Four pieces 20 inches wide will not fit two-across on a 44-inch width once you allow anything for the edge, so they go one per row and cost four rows of their own length. On 60-inch fabric the same four pieces fit two across and cost two rows. That single decision is usually worth more yardage than any other choice in the layout.

The fat quarter, and why it is not a quarter yard of length

A quarter of a yard is 9 inches, and a 9-inch strip across a 44-inch bolt is a shape that suits almost nothing. The fat quarter exists to solve that: a half yard, 18 inches deep, cut in half across the width, giving a piece about 18 by 22. The area is identical to the ordinary quarter yard and the number of usable shapes inside it is not.

The same logic produces the fat eighth at roughly 9 by 22 or 11 by 18 depending on the shop. When a pattern calls for fat quarters it is telling you something about the shape it needs, not the quantity, and substituting ordinary quarter-yard cuts of the same total yardage will leave you unable to cut the pieces.

Seam allowances are the inches that vanish

Every finished dimension in a pattern is smaller than the cut dimension by twice the seam allowance, and the allowance is quoted in inches in American patterns — 5/8 for garments, 1/4 for quilt piecing — and in millimetres in European ones. A 20-inch finished panel with 5/8 allowances is cut at 21 1/4, and four of those across a width need 85 inches, not 80.

Hems are the larger version of the same subtraction. A garment hem of 2 inches turned twice takes 4 inches off the length of the piece, and a curtain hem takes 8 to 10. Converting the yardage to inches and comparing it against the finished measurements, rather than the cut measurements, is how a project ends up exactly one hem short.

A pattern repeat costs you a repeat

Printed and woven fabrics repeat their design at a fixed interval, printed on the bolt end and typically 6 to 27 inches for furnishing fabric. Any two pieces that meet visibly — curtain panels, a sofa back and its cushions, the two fronts of a jacket — have to start at the same point in the repeat, which means cutting each one at a place the fabric chooses rather than where the tape says.

The cost is up to one full repeat per matched piece. Four curtain panels 90 inches long from fabric with a 24-inch repeat are cut at 96 inches each, so 384 inches instead of 360 — an extra two thirds of a yard that no conversion predicts. Directional prints and napped fabrics like velvet add the same problem in a different form: every piece must run the same way, so nothing can be nested head to tail.

A metre is three and three eighths of an inch longer than a yard

A metre is 39.37 inches against the yard’s 36, which makes the yard 0.9144 of a metre exactly. On one unit the gap is about three and three eighths of an inch and looks ignorable. On five units it is 17 inches, which is a garment piece, and on a bolt it is the difference between finishing and not.

The place this catches people is a pattern from one market cut from fabric bought in another. European patterns give metres, American ones yards, and treating them as interchangeable loses roughly nine per cent every time. Converting the metric figure to inches first and staying in inches through the layout removes the question entirely, which is the argument for doing the whole cutting plan in one small unit.

Cutting from the bolt without measuring twice

The reliable order is to convert the yardage to inches once, mark the full length along the selvedge, then work every piece as a measurement from one end rather than from the previous piece. Marking piece to piece accumulates the error of each mark, and on a nine-piece layout that is nine chances to drift; measuring from a single datum leaves the last piece as accurate as the first.

It also helps to square the end before anything else. Fabric comes off the bolt cut roughly, and the first inch or two is rarely perpendicular to the selvedge — pulling a crosswise thread and cutting along it costs an inch and makes every subsequent measurement mean what it says. That inch is the cheapest one in the whole project.

Measure what you were given before you trust the label

The yardage on the receipt is what was cut and not necessarily what you have. Counter cuts are made against a fixed yardstick with the fabric under some tension, the cut itself wanders, and a two-yard purchase can arrive as 70 inches rather than 72. Since the whole layout is planned against the converted figure, measuring the piece before cutting into it takes a minute and catches the only error nobody else will find.

Flaws are the other reason to check. Mills mark defects at the selvedge with a coloured thread or a tag, and a marked flaw in the middle of a two-yard piece removes far more than its own size from the usable length, because the pieces on either side of it have to be laid clear. Reputable shops add extra when they cut across a flaw; measuring is how you know whether yours did.
