Convert cup to pt
A US customary cup is 236.6 ml, but American nutrition labels use a "legal" cup of exactly 240 ml, and a metric cup in Australia is 250. A recipe scaled up tenfold will show which one it assumed.
A US pint is 473 ml and an imperial pint is 568 ml — a fifth larger. This is the single most consequential difference between the two systems for anybody following a recipe or ordering a drink.
Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 2 of these fit into one US pint with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a US pint, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.
Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.
The US pint is two different sizes wearing one name. This page uses the US one, which is 2 cup; the imperial one still used in the UK and Ireland is 2.4019 cup — larger by 20.1 %.
That gap is the awkward size: far too big to ignore in a recipe, and far too small to spot from the answer alone. If your figure came from a British source, take the second number, and note that the fluid ounce is the one unit here where the imperial measure is the smaller of the two.
The factor is two, so the conversion is a halving and the interesting part is what the halving produces. Even cup counts give whole pints — 2 cups is a pint, 4 is two, 8 is four and also a half gallon. Odd counts always give a half, because there is nothing between a cup and a pint to absorb the remainder: 3 cups is 1.5 pints, 7 cups is 3.5, and no amount of restating turns either into a whole number.
That is why cup counts in recipes cluster on even numbers. A recipe asking for 2 or 4 cups of stock was written by somebody thinking in containers; one asking for 3 was written by somebody thinking in ratios. Neither is wrong, but the second will always leave part of a pint in the fridge, and it is worth knowing that before shopping rather than after — particularly for cream, which does not keep long once the carton is open.
Dairy is where this conversion is done most often, because heavy cream, half-and-half and sour cream are sold in pints and half pints while recipes ask for them in cups. A half-pint carton is 1 cup, a pint is 2, a quart is 4. A recipe wanting 1½ cups of cream needs a pint carton, and leaves half a cup — which is the standard amount left over from the standard dessert, and the reason so many recipes end with a suggestion for it.
The rule for shopping is to round the pint figure up, never the cup figure. Rounding 3 cups to "a pint and a half, call it a pint" is how a batch comes up short at the point where nothing can be done about it. Converting first and then buying whole containers puts the rounding error where it belongs: in the fridge rather than in the bowl.
Doubling a recipe is where cup counts stop being useful as counts. Six cups measured out is six separate operations and six chances to lose track; 3 pints is one operation with a jug. The larger the batch the more the pint earns its place, and above about eight cups the quart takes over for the same reason — 12 cups is 3 quarts, and nobody wants to count to twelve with a cup measure.
The vessel matters as much as the measuring. Two cups of liquid in a 2-cup jug is full to the line and will slop; the same volume in a pint jug with headroom will not. When a doubled recipe suddenly needs a bigger pan, the pint figure is the one to check it against, because cookware capacity is quoted in quarts and pints far more often than in cups.
The United States kept a separate set of dry measures for produce, and the dry pint is one of them: about 550.6 ml against the liquid pint's 473.2, roughly 16 per cent larger. Berries, cherry tomatoes and small produce are sold in it, which is why a "pint of blueberries" and a "pint of cream" are not the same volume even though the label uses one word.
Converting a dry pint to cups is therefore not a doubling. A dry pint is about 2.33 liquid cups of space, and how many cups of fruit comes out of that depends on packing — whole raspberries leave far more air than blueberries do. Any recipe that gives both a pint and a cup figure for the same fruit is quietly telling you which one it trusts; use that one.
A US pint is 16 US fluid ounces, or 473.176 ml. An imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, or 568.261 ml. The difference is a fifth, and it is the largest single discrepancy between the two customary systems for anybody cooking or drinking — a British pint glass genuinely holds more than an American one, and both are correctly labelled.
For a cup count that means the imperial pint is about 2.4 US cups rather than 2. Two cups of liquid poured into an imperial pint glass leaves it a fifth empty. Recipes are rarely the problem here, since British ones weigh rather than measure by volume, but drink recipes, brewing instructions and anything scaled from a pub measure are, and the fifth is enough to notice in a glass.

Only the first of those makes two cups a pint, and the others are off by 1.4, 5.7 and −15 per cent respectively.
The error scales with the batch, which is what makes it worth checking before a large one. A single metric cup instead of a customary one is 13 ml over — nothing. Eight of them, in a recipe scaled to a gallon, is 107 ml over, most of a half cup, and in a batter or a custard that is enough to change the result rather than merely the yield.
Cookware and storage are sold in pints and quarts, so translating before shopping saves guessing. Four cups is 2 pints, which is a quart — the standard deli container and the standard small saucepan. Eight cups is a half gallon or 2 quarts, the size of a large storage tub. Sixteen cups is a gallon and a 4-quart pot will not hold it with any margin.
Leave headroom in the conversion, not in the measurement. A liquid filled to the exact rim of its stated capacity cannot be carried, stirred or frozen — water expands about nine per cent on freezing, so 4 cups of stock in a quart container will lift the lid. Rounding the pint figure up one step when choosing a vessel is the cheapest insurance in the kitchen, and it costs nothing but shelf space in a cupboard you were going to fill anyway.
A pint and a half — 1.5 pints, or 24 fluid ounces. If you are buying, that means two pint containers with half of one left over, which is why recipes built around a shop rather than a measure tend to call for 2 cups or 4 rather than 3.
