Foot and Yard

A foot is twelve inches, and it is the unit heights and room sizes are quoted in across the United States. Aviation quotes altitude in feet almost everywhere, including in countries that are metric for everything else; China is the exception, where controllers clear aircraft in metres.

A yard is three feet, and outside American football and fabric shops it is a unit most people rarely meet. It is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.

It takes 3 feet to make a yard

Going this way is a division, and by a whole number: 3 of these fit into one yard with nothing left over. The awkwardness is only that the answers come out as fractions — a third of a yard, a twelfth of one — rather than as the round figures the other direction gives you.

Nothing is lost to rounding even so. The division is exact, and if your answer will not sit still as a decimal — 0.0833… and friends — that is the fraction showing through, not an error creeping in.

Three, nine and twenty-seven

The linear conversion is a division by three and nobody gets it wrong. The other two are where the money is: a square yard is nine square feet, because both sides are three times longer, and a cubic yard is twenty-seven cubic feet, because all three are. Those factors are not conversions of the yard figure — they are the yard figure cubed, and the arithmetic has to be done on the volume, not on each dimension separately.

The error to watch for is dividing a cubic-foot total by three. It produces a number that looks reasonable, is nine times too big, and does not announce itself until a truck arrives with nine yards of concrete for a job that needed one. The reverse error, multiplying by three, is caught immediately because the answer is absurd; the divide-by-three version is the one that gets ordered.

Concrete is ordered in cubic yards and poured in inches

A slab has two dimensions in feet and a thickness in inches, and that mismatch is half the difficulty. The thickness has to become a fraction of a foot before anything else happens: four inches is 0.333 ft, five is 0.417, six is 0.5. A 10 by 12 slab at four inches is 40 cubic feet, which is 1.48 cubic yards, and it is worth noticing how small that number is compared with how much concrete forty cubic feet looks like.

Then it gets rounded up, and not by a token amount. Ready-mix comes in quarter or half yard steps, subgrade is never flat, and the difference between ordering 1.5 and ordering 1.75 yards is a few tens of dollars against the cost of a cold joint through the middle of a slab. Ten per cent over the calculated volume is the standard allowance and it exists because the calculation is exact and the ground is not.

A yard of topsoil covers less than people expect

Bulk landscape materials are sold by the cubic yard and spread to a depth in inches, which is the same unit mismatch upside down. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so spread at three inches — a quarter of a foot — it covers 108 square feet, which is a bed roughly ten feet by eleven. At two inches it covers 162 square feet, and at six it covers 54.

Those three figures are worth carrying because they turn a garden into an order without arithmetic. A bed of 400 square feet at three inches needs 400 ÷ 108, so a little under four yards. Mulch, gravel and bark behave the same way, with the caveat that mulch settles and gravel compacts, so the depth you spread is not the depth you end up with.

Flooring quoted per square yard against flooring quoted per square foot

Carpet is the last common flooring priced by the square yard, and it sits next to tile, vinyl and hardwood priced by the square foot. The two prices are not comparable by eye: a carpet at 27 dollars a square yard is 3 dollars a square foot, and comparing 27 against 3 without dividing by nine makes the carpet look nine times worse than it is.

The room measurement runs the same way. A room 12 by 15 feet is 180 square feet, which is 20 square yards, and the carpet quote will be against the 20. Where the two diverge is waste: broadloom comes 12 feet wide, so a room wider than 12 feet takes a seam and the yardage billed is set by the length of roll consumed rather than the area of the floor.

Rounding up, and the fraction of a load you pay for anyway

Suppliers do not deliver arbitrary quantities. Ready-mix plants have a minimum load, usually one yard, and charge a short-load fee below three or four; bulk aggregate comes by the full or half truckload; topsoil is scooped by the bucket and a bucket is a fixed size. The practical answer is often not the number the calculation gave but the next size the supplier actually sells.

That changes how the conversion should be used. Work the volume out honestly, then ask what the increments are, then round to one of them. Ordering 2.3 yards is not a thing that happens; ordering 2.5 is, and the extra two tenths is cheaper than discovering the shortfall with a screed board in your hands.

Where a plain linear yard still turns up on a site

Not everything is squared or cubed. Fence panels, kerbing, drainage pipe and geotextile are sold by the linear yard or the linear foot depending on the supplier, and here the conversion really is a division by three. A 90-foot run of fence is 30 yards, and the only trap is that a supplier quoting per yard and a supplier quoting per foot look like they are three times apart when they are the same price.

Excavation is the other linear case that turns into a volume halfway through. A trench 60 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 feet deep is 360 cubic feet, which is 13.3 cubic yards of spoil to move — a number that surprises people because the trench does not look like thirteen truck buckets. Spoil also bulks when it is dug, typically by twenty to thirty per cent, so the pile is larger than the hole.

Why the yard survived in these trades and not in framing

Framing, plumbing and electrical work all abandoned the yard entirely: studs, sheets, pipe and cable are counted in feet and inches with no yard anywhere. Bulk materials kept it because the yard is close to the size of the thing being delivered — a cubic yard is roughly what fits in a small truck bed, and a mixer drum holds eight or nine of them.

That is the honest reason the unit persists. It is not a measurement so much as a package size, which is why yard figures on a delivery note come in halves and quarters rather than decimals, and why the conversion from your feet-based measurement is nearly always followed by a rounding step. The precision belongs to the site dimensions; the yard is what the supplier can put on a truck.

Aggregate sold by the ton against space measured in yards

Half the suppliers in this trade price by volume and half by weight, and the conversion between them is not a unit conversion at all — it is a density, and it changes with the material and the weather. Screened topsoil runs around 1.1 to 1.3 tons to the cubic yard, sand about 1.3 to 1.4, and crushed stone roughly 1.35 to 1.45. Wet material can be twenty per cent heavier than the same volume dry.

So the safe order of work is to measure the space in feet, convert to cubic yards, and only then ask the supplier what a yard of their material weighs. Working the other way — starting from a weight and assuming a density — puts the uncertainty at the beginning of the calculation where it compounds. It is also worth checking which figure a delivery charge is based on, since a truck limited by weight and a truck limited by volume fill up at different points for the same material.

Twenty-seven, because a cubic yard is 3 by 3 by 3 feet. Dividing cubic feet by 3 instead of 27 is the classic ordering error, and it produces an order nine times too large — a mistake that arrives on a truck rather than on paper.

How much concrete does a 10 by 12 foot slab at 4 inches take?

Four inches is a third of a foot, so the volume is 10 × 12 × 0.333 = 40 cubic feet, which is 1.48 cubic yards. Ready-mix is normally ordered to the quarter yard, so that is 1.75 yards with something in hand for the ground being uneven.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

Nine. Both sides scale, so the factor is 3 squared and not 3. A room of 180 square feet is 20 square yards, and quoting it as 60 is the same shape of error as the cubic one, one power down.

Should I order to the exact yardage?
